GOTTA HAVE GOSPEL 6!

Integrity Music, Zomba Label Group, Columbia

Reviewed by Moses T. Alexander Greene

I have officially fallen in love again…with a gospel project that is!

In these tight economic times, every dollar counts and if you are like me, you would rather not purchase a project and then later within the first hour of it playing in your CD chamber or iPod realize that the only songs you enjoy are the singles you heard on the radio. Well, let me introduce my new love to you: “Gospel Have Gospel! 6.”

“Gotta Have Gospel! 6” is so much more than the top Gospel songs from your favorite platinum- and gold-selling gospel artists. The superb song selection and smooth transitions bring fluidity and sense of intentionality to the project versus feeling like a label haphazardly threw together a bunch of songs. The mixing between songs on the two-disc set seems like a small added value but is ingenious because it sounds like you are listening to great radio versus a compilation of songs with abrupt starts and stops.

Additionally, the outstanding project is chock-full of those songs you loved hearing in rotation on the radio but perhaps were not unable to buy every single project. Moreover, there is bonus DVD content with music videos for you to enjoy with your friends and family at home. Two discs and a DVD with music videos? Yes!

Spanning contemporary gospel, urban gospel, praise & worship, choral, quartet, and everything in between, this project has it all!

Mike McCoy & Voices United

"Continue to Continue"

Record Label: Independent

Reviewed by John Barton

I wanted to take a moment to tell you about a newly-released CD entitled "Continue To Continue"  by the group Mike McCoy & Voices United.  In my opinion, this group is one of the best kept secrets in the gospel music industry.

"Continue To Continue" has a wonderful combination of contemporary gospel and praise & worship songs.  The CD starts off with the uplifting song "Join Me In The Praise". The project  then takes you from a posture of praising God to one of worship in "Come Thou Holy Spirit" ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QbVT6e-hKc0 ) and "Lord I Worship You The King."  The track "Help Me Lift Jesus Up" is my personal favorite. The song, which features Elder Mike McCoy on lead, takes the old familiar church hymn "Lift Him Up" and infuses it with a nice jazzy sound to it.

Another personal favorite "I'll Praise Him" features the soulful vocals of alto Kim McLeod on lead.  McLeod begins her solo with full-bodied sultry tones which crescendo into a rousing delivery of power, authority and ministry such that your soul is encouraged to renew its commitment to praise God "forevermore."  The traditional sounding "God Will Take Care of You" is perfect for Sunday morning ministry for choirs while the upbeat, energy-driven "Get Thee Hence" is a catchy tune that will give listeners a vocal and physical workout! this song reminds us of what our response should be when the enemy tries to tempt us.

With powerful lyrics, tight harmony, and wonderful music arrangements, every song on this CD will minister to your spirit.  If you love great gospel music, I highly recommend that you make "Continue To Continue" part of your gospel music collection.

Ricky Dillard & New G

The 7th Episode: Live in Toronto

NuSpring / EMI Gospel

2008 may be declared “The Year of the Choir” in gospel music due to Ricky Dillard & New G’s latest project The 7th Episode: Live in Toronto. If you haven’t caught the group’s unforgettable recent performances on the 2008 Stellar Awards or Bobby Jones Gospel, click on these YouTube links: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zANRvzGt__Q&NR=1 and  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUg8VjIEEv8.

(I was at both tapings and what happened in the atmosphere was indescribable. I don't EVER remember seeing a group featured on Bobby Jones Gospel that had the audience dancing and shouting all over that studio like Ricky Dillard and New G did on "One More Chance"; and after they performed "The Light" on the Stellars, the entire audience was rendered speechless).

Everything about the music on The 7th Episode: Live in Toronto highlights what we love about music for choirs—namely, it is Sunday morning worship inviting. The aggregation of many voices (versus select voices of praise teams or ensembles), the band you can see in the corner of the church egging each other to be fierce while also driving the songs, the notes that are just high enough that you have make sure you have a good choir buddy next to you just in case you can’t take that extra breath to hit it, and the overall “let’s have good chu’ch and enjoy doing it” feel of this project makes this a great addition for those who have ever had a “gospel choir experience."

On the single The Light led by Dillard and LaJaunese Robinson, you will be taken back to Sunday afternoon 4:00 services when “the honorees” presented “the grand march” down the aisles of the church. The song has funk, a driving beat, a great message, a great lead and is Ricky Dillard and New G at their best! Awesome God is an energetic, praise-intensive song with outstanding dynamics and a “freeing agent” that commands your body to groove with all liberty.  Our Father You Are Holy is strong without being forceful, worship-inducing without someone having to verbally say “Let us worship Him.”  The song is simple and powerful yet only has 14 words: Our Father, You are holy/ We give You glory/ And we bless Your name. One More Chance, led by Evangelist Lillian Lloyd (who Ricky calls “The Coo-Coo Lady”. Listen to her adlib to see why), is straight COGIC/Pentecostal/Fire-Baptized Holiness in its flavor. If you literally can get your sanctified step on for the full 4-plus minutes of the song, you bad! (Smile.) Seeing the group perform this song live is a treat because of the precision and command with which its members minister.

Other notable tracks include Search Me Lord, Grateful, and Bless His Holy Name. The CCM final track Thou Art My God is a new addition to the CD as well.

The 7th Episode: Live In Toronto has ushered us back to the future in some ways. Be assured that the power of the gospel choir is here…again, and we have Ricky Dillard & New G to thank for it.

Thanks for your support and for signing the Guestbook. I have tons of products to give away. Leave a comment and you can be one of ten guests who receive free CDs or DVDs.

Jonathan Nelson & Purpose

“Right Now Praise”

Integrity Music/Columbia Records

Reviewed by John Barton

Every once in a while an artist comes to the scene and s/he so subtly revolutionizes a genre of music that before we know it we are wondering how we ever existed without their musical genius. Stellar Award-winning songwriter and singer Jonathan Nelson is one of those persons in gospel music for the 21st Century. During my “Behind-The-Scenes In The GreeneRoom: LIVE” interviews at the recording for this project, Stephen Hurd called Nelson “the Andrae Crouch of our time”. Because of Nelson’s extraordinary songwriting gifting, I believe no truer words have been spoken.

With what is easily the most anticipated gospel music project of 2008, Jonathan Nelson & Purpose return to the musical landscape with “Right Now Praise,” a collection of 14 songs that empower listeners to take possession of every promise God has spoken over their lives. On track 1 “Champions” and the first single of the project “My Name Is Victory” the group declares the believer’s position in Christ and reminds us that our victorious and overcoming destinies have already been Divinely-written by GOD. (To see both of these songs ministered live, click here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFB58i7QP9k&feature=related)

With his twin brother and vocal powerhouse Jason Nelson sharing lead, Nelson introduces Right Now Praise” which is sure to be a new mainstay of Sunday morning worship services. Click here to see it ministered live: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnoF8YtCNKY&feature=related. Traditionalists are sure to have “Yes Out There” (featuring Sheri Jones-Moffit on leads) on repeat on their iPods as will praisers “Great and Mighty” (featuring William Murphy) on theirs.

You can literally feel the breath of God in the worship that results from the flow the group creates on tracks 8 thru 11 (“Hymn Medley: Fill My Cup Lord/I Need Thee Every Hour”/”Capacity,” “Only You,” and “How Great Is Our God. Another notable track is “Drench My Heart” which Purpose ministers with choral precision.

I don’t know how to end this review but the ole Motown philosophy Berry Gordy used with his songwriters and producers comes to mind. ”If it was between you going out to lunch one day this week and buying the CD which would I tell you do? Hands down: Bring leftovers or make a sandwich and get the CD!  Right now is your time for “Right Now Praise!”  The sense of victory and purpose, praise and surrender that results from the ministry of this CD will stay with you longer than that meal too!

Hunt’s Hunch with Veronica Hunt

  • Wess Morgan

  • Look at Me Now

Wess Morgan. Remember the name and watch for his meteoric rise in the gospel music arena because it’s coming. When I first heard this CD I recognized that there was something unique and very special about this project. Look At Me Now is a revealing musical testimony of Pastor Wess Morgan’s deliverance from a life of sin, drugs and poor life choices—all of which included the loss of his family, home and dignity before God restored it all back to him.

At a recent Hunt’s Hunch, the majority of those gathered gave both the CD and DVD high ratings. Listeners said they would “definitely” buy both products of Morgan, a trained musician whose soulful yet gentle musical styling are reminiscent of seasoned African American R&B artists of 60s, 70s and 80s. If you can’t tell from the CD cover, Wess Morgan is a southern, white, 34-year-old, preacher’s kid and now associate pastor who grew up on a musical diet of country music; yet, his total package and experiences make him extremely impacting for the gospel music landscape.

  • The title cut Look at Me Now will literally take your breath away.

Look at me now / Destiny prevailed All weapons formed completely failed

For those who said I never would

He worked it for my good

In composition and arrangement it has the splendor, meaning and momentum of Whitney Houston’s One Moment in Time or the widely covered Wind Beneath My Wings. By the time I got to the end of it I was in tears…and simply grateful.

  • On He Brought Me Out, Wess couples with Stellar Award winning vocalist Daryl Coley to deliver an outstanding song of victory! For all fans of Daryl Coley, this is classic Daryl Coley!  (Hunt’s Hunch Quick Fact: Darryl Coley stated that Look At Me Now was the best recording he’s ever attended!)

  • He Stepped In, a duet with Jason Crabb of the world famous Crabb Family, is a tender ballad that tells the listener how God made a way out and saved his life. Jeffrey Osborne, one of the most loved balladeers of all time, immediately comes to mind when you hear Morgan on this track.
Shown above is Pastor Wess Morgan ministering at the One Entity Showcase
of the Gospel Music Workshop of America’s Annual Convention in Orlando.
(Photograph by Dre Photography)
  • With the smooth, R&B sounding You Gave Me Hope, Morgan’s ability to give hope to the hopeless by openly and unashamedly sharing his past failures comes shining through.  He also covers I Won’t Complain, the church classic recorded by the late Rev. Paul Jones. This track was an overwhelming favorite at Hunt’s Hunch.  Wess had the entire audience—both on the DVD and those gathered at the viewing party—on their feet with this song.
  • Love My Hurt Away is Pastor Wess’ declaration of God’s love and how He can turn your life around.  It showcases a fantastic horn section reminiscent of bands of the 80’s. Can’t Stop Thinkin, another one of my favorites, is an uptempo, skate mix and will make all listeners feel invigorated.

Other notable tracks include You May Not Know Me, Just Can’t Get Enough (a funky, upbeat, old school groove), and It’s My Pleasure, a nice-and-easy listening selection with Wess’ father on lead guitar.

With a life story that reveals God can take even the most wretched individual and create something beautiful and a vocal gift that has elements of the resilience of Tina Turner, the soul of Otis Redding, the tenderness of Jeffrey Osbourne and the sheer power of Christ alive in a blood-washed believer named Wess Morgan, this CD is not only anointed, but a must buy!

INDEPENDENT ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

Marcy Moorman & Ekklesia

There are two projects that I have had for 9-12 months, waiting for the right time to introduce them to the “In The GreeneRoom” family: Marcy Morman & Ekklesia and Darien Dennis & Living Word. One project was lukewarm, the other—aggressive, in your face ministry with a fresh sound; but both were necessary to bring to you.

·         MARCY MORMAN & EKKLESIA

·         MY SECRET PLACE

·         http://www.ekklesiaministry.com

·         Reviewed by Moses T. Alexander Greene

Lukewarm. A great weakness with My Secret Place is that the strongest songs in terms of lyrical content and musical composition are placed in the middle thru the end of the CD. Every time I listened to the project, I had the same reaction to the first few tracks and wouldn’t push myself to other cuts which. The second weakness is that the mixing totally detracts from the strengths of lead and background vocals as well as instrumentation. The vocal arrangements are different. At times, it’s like, “Yeah. That’s what’s up!,” and at other times the dissonance of the notes seem to clash in a way that has you wincing with “What was that?”

You Are

·         Best song on the project

·         Worship-inducing, gentle, welcoming

·         Beautiful musical orchestration

·         Strong, worshipful lead vocal

·         Comes across with a purity and authenticity that I wanted on the entire project

Imma Whosoever

*   1 minute sermonette preceding song adds nothing to the track

*   Innovative sound, yet bland

*   Horn arrangements by Maurice “Mo” Davis seem to overpower  background vocals

*   The song (in composition) doesn’t go anywhere but has potential

Something About You (Show Forth Your Praises)

*   Nice cut

*   The mixing will have you straining to hear lead vocalist Marcy Moorman over the music

Bless God

*   Poor production quality for vocals

*   Music drowns out lead and background vocals which already come across very muted

*   Nice horn accompaniment (Maurice “Mo” Davis and Courtney M. Nero)

My Secret Place

*   Nice harmonies and blend with background vocals

*   Again, the mixing at times has music drowning vocals

*   Beautifully composed

His Chosen

*   A little pitchy with background vocals

*   Beautiful song with powerful sentiment.

*   Great chorus

Greatest strength of My Secret Place is that each song has Scriptural references and thus, steeped or motivated by the word of God. Weaknesses—the mixing; and some songs just weren’t a good blend for the vocal strengths of the group and lead.  For future projects I say, make sure that worshipful songs are a large part of your repertoire and work with different engineers and keep moving forward.

I walked into Psalms 117 Coffeehouse (www.ps117.org) in Silver Spring, Maryland about a year ago to interview Izzy and a new praise & worship group, Darien Dennis & Living Worship, was in ministry. I was handed a project and saw 21 tracks on a 2 disc CD.  Thoughts that immediately came to mind were, “Why would a brand new group sing 21 tracks on their first CD,” “Shouldn’t they saved something for a second CD.” and  “Isn’t this a bit aggressive?” Seeing the ministry that night and listening to the CD, I have the answers.

Everything about this project is tight, praise intensive, worship overflowing, and unadulterated—seemingly pure. The live presentation of the music, the horn arrangements, the balance of the voices, and the lead all compliment one another. There seems to be no “track applause” or contrived moments of praise. It’s like an unplugged album.

Favorite Songs

DISC I

Lord of All (Make Your Presence Known)

*   Praise intensive invitation for the “Lord of All” to manifest His presence

Song of Zion

*   Has a bass line and driving beat that house music phines will love

I Can’t Live Without You

*   Latin sounding,

*   Smooth beginning coupled perfectly with drive of unbelievable hot factor: “I Just I Can’t Live without you/ I need you/ Oh Yes I Need You”

One God

*   That’s right—the song that Maurette Brown Clark that is currently tearing up the charts was first recorded by Darien Dennis. (Dennis will definitely be a songwriter in demand in the near future).

DISC II

Dennis demonstrates that he is more than a skillful songwriter but a worshipper at heart. The second disc is so steeped in worship that it is hard to pick a favorite; and Darien Dennis & Living Worship make worship simple. You enter into the holy of Holies because the atmosphere the group creates allows for it.  You naturally want to speak to God for yourself without being over-exhorted, over-commanded into doing such. Worship Medley (Parts I, II, and III) are the perfect way to start your devotion time in the morning. I could, however, have done without the solo at the beginning of Seasons which sounded a strained, (especially with the organ accompaniment), but once the background vocals came in, the song itself was powerful, the lead met the song and the message life affirming: God is able to change the “season” of your life in one moment.

I know the Bible says, “There is nothing new under the sun” but Darien Dennis & Living Worship’s sound and ministry is so distinctive and pure that I want to call it “original”. I feel the same way about A New Place as I did when I first heard Charles Woolfork, Israel Houghton & New Breed, and Micah Stampley’s latest CD, “A Fresh Wind”: I knew I was witnessing something that would have a long term impact on the gospel music. And regarding my questions, Darien Dennis & Living Worship represent the power of knowing God in your youth; He is, after all, the God who makes all things possible. So, “Why not have 21 tracks?”, “Why save something for a second cd when life isn’t promised?” and “What’s wrong with being aggressive and giving your everything?”. Darien Dennis & Living Worship this project brought me to “a new place” of possibility within myself. I’m now a fan—objective, but a fan of your ministry. Get this project.

When I was first asked to review Tamela Mann: The Live Experience (CD/DVD set), I was a little hesitant about what I would hear and see.  As a result of her success as Cora Jean Simmons in many of Tyler Perry’s stage productions, I was hoping and praying that neither “Cora Jean” nor “Mr. Brown” (portrayed by Tamela’s accomplished singer/actor husband David Mann also from the Perry’s productions), would make any guest appearances. My prayers were answered! As I popped the CD into my player and began listening, I heard nothing but pure Tamela Mann at her best!

e081

From her days with Kirk Franklin and The Family and more recently on stage, I already knew Tamela would go beyond singing; she would crank.  However, I soon also realized that along with having an absolutely beautiful voice, she has a heart for worship. Many of the selections on Tamela Mann: The Live Experience, Mann’s first live CD/DVD recording, immediately pulled me in without having to do too much.  There were no driving baselines, wailing guitars or over- synthesized instruments.  The majority of her songs were clean, clear and uncluttered.  With an array of musical styles to choose from, The Live Experience is worth a trip online or to the nearest music store to be added to your music library.

Pros:  CD: Tamela Mann: The Live Experience truly proves that a great cd does not have to be filled with super-producers; you just need quality music.  Everything from the production value and song selection to the order of the songs seemed to have been well thought out. Additionally, Tamela sounds incredible and is vocally supported with the background vocals of the Stellar Award-winning group Myron Butler and Levi.  Songs that will have you hitting the repeat button include: Gotta Keep Movin’ (Larron Vaughn), Hallelujah (Tyler Perry/Elvin Ross), Safety in His Arms (David Mann/Tamela Mann/Myron Butler) and You Deserve My Praise (DeMarcus Williams). DVD:  Some of the things you miss on the CD, you get during the DVD.  You are able to see glimpses of Tamela’s personality, and the stage crew did a wonderful job on the set.

Cons: CD: During certain portions of the CD, I felt as if some of the elements I would normally hear on a live CD weren’t there (audience reaction, clapping, etc).  I would have selected another final song (maybe Marvelous).  Although it’s a Praise Medley, I personally wanted, needed and yearned for something else—something that wasn’t a cappella.  DVD:  Even though Tamela provided great energy during the opening selection, I believe two background dancers would have propelled it to the next level.  The camera operators had some good audience shots however I believe more and differing shots were necessary.

Overall, although the project isn’t on a major gospel record label, Tamela Mann: The Live Experience is a great effort and another step forward for Mann’s ministry of music. If you cannot find it in your local gospel music store, request it; it’ll be worth it.

4 words: Hot! Hot! Hot! Hot! Karen Clark-Sheard, Twinkie Clark, Jacky Clark-Chisolm and Dorinda Clark-Cole a.k.a. “The Clark Sisters” definitely know how to leave an industry they helped create.

At the recent 2007 GRAMMY Salute to Gospel held in Washington, D.C., it was the first time I was able to interview all of them in one setting. As significant as the moment was for me as a journalist and a connoisseur of gospel music, the only thought swirling around my head was, “How is it possible that these women have been in gospel music over 30 years?” I mean, I’m just over 30 years old myself and that would mean that as long as I’ve been, they’ve been. After listening to the legendary group’s latest project, Live…One Last Time, I promise you that you will find yourself asking the same question.

Karen Clark-Sheard lets “In The GreeneRoom: LIVE” know that she is wearing Louis Vuitton—from head to toe.

Live…One Last Time is 17 tracks of pure sunshine and one of the best projects of 2007! The group gives the listener a perfect blending of 5 new tracks—showing that its relevance and impact for this generation is just as strong as ever—while also revisiting its earlier work which made “The Clark Sisters”  trailblazers in the gospel music genre.  There have only been a handful of projects that I literally loved practically loved everything about them; but this is one such project.

clark_200x150

Elbernita “Twinkie” Clark, who penned many of the group’s signature songs that audiences have loved for three decades (and which are showcased on “Live—One Last Time”) is songwriting force with which to be reckoned. Get ready to hear classics like Name It Claim It, Tried Him And I Know Him, Pray For The U.S.A., Jesus Is A Love Song, and You Brought The Sunshine. New songs including the scorching single Blessed & Highly Favored which is quickly becoming one of the most requested songs of the summer; Livin’ , Something New and my personal favorite Instrument, which I hope will be the second single released.

Before its release, I was pretty sure that the legendary Caravans were in line to receive all duo or group awards at next year’s Stellars, GMAs and Grammy’s—but I’m no longer sure. With Donald Lawrence as producer and the Clark Sisters as the instruments of praise that they are, Live…One Last Time is the quintessential way to go out—on top of your game.  I know it doesn’t match what our Heavenly Father will say to them, but, ladies, “Well done.”

Press Shot

Everyone visiting “In the GreeneRoom” is already familiar with the ministry and sheer vocal power of Pastor Donnie McClurkin, one of gospel music’s biggest stars.  On “We Praise You” Pastor Donnie teams up again with sisters Cheri, Andrea, Tanya and Olivia as The McClurkin Project and these music ministers offer listeners distinctive, family-steeped praise and worship without sounding like cookie-cutter replicas of Pastor Donnie or each other.

The title track “We Praise You” is a must-have for praise and worship teams across the world. The soul stirring, authoritative lead vocals of Andrea supported by the tight background vocals and an upbeat, pop-flavored praise song create an atmosphere of love and admiration for the Heavenly father.

With every repetition of Andrea’s adlib “There’s nobody like You” the souls of Black folk (and all folks) witness the sheer greatness of our God. With the “Reprise” of “We Praise You” I immediately thought of Fred Hammond’s line “Late in the midnight hour/God’s gonna turn it around/it’s going to work in your favor.” That one line began showing up in songs and adlibs all over the church community. The same holds true for the lyrics of “Reprise.”

If I couldn’t say a word. If I couldn’t say a word/

If I couldn’t say a word. If I couldn’t say a word/

I’d just wave my hand/ I’d just wave my hand/

I’d just leap for joy/ I’d just leap for joy

Because that meaning behind these words is so impacting, I predict praise & worship leaders all across the country will begin using those very words into their exhortation.

“As Long As There’s You” led by Pastor Donnie is sure to become a classic of the group’s repertoire. In my years in the Church and in the industry, I simply have never heard a song with its sentiments. The song, reflective of warm African harmonies and inviting rhythms, reinforces that going to heaven is only meaningful because it will be the place where we will meet Jesus. The musical transition to the hymn “When We All Get Together” is masterful. This track was one of my favorites.

Other favorites are sure to include: “You’ll Be Fine” led by Pastor Donnie, the worship-inducing “Touch Me,” the innovative “In The News Today,” and “Song of Gratitude” which is pure worship. Overall, "We Praise You" shows that the well of ministry runs deep in the McClurkin family and shows no indication of drying up.

7 Sons of Soul return to the musical landscape with their latest release, “Witness.”  11 tracks display the group’s versatility in gospel music and give listeners opportunity to grow with one of the industry’s up-and-coming all-male groups. Some songs are so marinated in classic R&B such that you will find yourself grooving as if you were listening to Al Green in the 70s while a handful of others are so smothered with that sanctified, hands clapping, foot stomping quartet sound that you will envision the mothers of the church shoutin’ with that one arm behind their backs right there in your family room or office.

NEWBACKCVR

The average length of a song on the project is 4:05 so to say that the project is commercial radio friendly is an understatement. In live ministry, these songs are sure to fully engage the audience and be ministered with the utmost care.

Favorites are sure to be: The title cut “Witness” and “Prayin’ 4 U” (soulful, R&B, grooves); “Clap Your Hands” and “Thank You Jesus” (a straight quartet-flavored, get the church rocking as the lead singers walk down the aisle); the African American church classic—especially for old afternoon choir anniversaries—“Trouble In My Way” and “One of Those Days” (an easy listening, beautifully-composed melody which a great chorus). “Been Changed” could easily be played on the Quiet Storm of your local R&B/Hip-Hop radio station. Listeners who have had to walk away from something or someone they have loved will find that these lyrics resonate with them.

7SOS_Prayin2

On this project 7 Sons of Soul offer listeners a project diverse enough to be enjoyed by the men in your life who enjoy a variety of gospel music, soul, urban inspirational and classic Black church standards. The project would be the perfect present for the 35-55 year old father in your life (Father’s Day is Sunday) or just for yourself.

House of Gospel: The 80’s Volume Anthology

Get it! Get it! Get It! This was the first thought that leaped into my mind after I heard song number 3 and by the end of the 14 track project, I knew that my gut instincts were right. Simply put: Light Records has put together an anthology of Gospel music that this generation needs to hear and others of us need to “re-hear”. Every song brings you back to a place of remembrance—especially if you were coming of age in the 80s or were already of age. Because I am a bona fide church boy/choir boy of the 70s and 80s, I loved every minute of this CD.

Do you remember where you were when you first heard Completely Yes by Sandra Crouch? I had not heard the song in years but immediately was transported to age 11 in the Sunshine Choir when we sang it on 1st and 3rd Sundays. Within moments of hearing the song in 2007, however, I was in tears; by the end of the song, I was in worship. Who knew at 11 what a real “yes, Lord” would take? I couldn’t get the song off “Repeat” for 3 days! This song messed me up because I know what I’ve gone through since those many years ago and now its lyrics are just so much more purposed and powerful.

Commissioned, the group which would boast such mind-blowing talent as Fred Hammond, Marvin Sapp and Keith Staten, contributes “Love Isn’t Love” to the project.  I didn’t grow up hearing this song and so it was new for me. However I definitely understood why it was included.

“Holy One” by Tramaine Hawkins messed me up for another three days. Before I had ever “felt” the Holy Spirit, I would hear this song on the radio and just start crying. About what was a wiry adolescent crying? I can’t for the life of me remember (LOL) but I remember being touched inside when Tramaine sang:

Day is almost night

I don’t want to lose this fight

I’ve fooled around much too long

Give the strength I need

To be able to succeed

And I’ll heed to your every command

And to everyone I’ll show

My purpose and my goal

In you, I will be able to stand

Holy One I never want to let you down

No More

The background vocals made me want to sing background. “I’ll never let you down, No more/Never.” What is even better is that the 1980s Tramaine is just as powerful as 2007 Tramaine.

Other outstanding tracks include “What Is This” by the Hawkins Family, “Take Up Your Cross” by LA Mass, “Restoration” and “Everything You Touch (Is A Song) by The Winans, “Glorify the Lord” by Sandra Crouch, “Unspeakable Joy” by Douglas Miller and “We Shall Behold Him” by Vickie Winans.

This music brought me back to the place in Gospel where contemporary Gospel music was first budding and every artist seemed to have their own sound versus the cookie-cutter ministry and performances that we, at times, hear and see today. For instance, no one has a tenor falsetto like Bishop Hawkins; no not one, no not one! And The Winanssound is still so distinctive that no male Gospel group has been able to have a similar impact on the landscape, unless it was Commissioned which is also featured on this compilation.

trailblazer_hawkinstribute

Light Records calls this anthology “The Decade’s Best Loved Gospel Songs.” Although there’s no Pastor Shirley Caesar on it, I’ve got to concur. (Smile). The lyrical content, songwriting and instrumentation from these trailblazers blended the new thing that God was doing in them with the soul of belonging to and growing up in and around the Church. This CD takes you back to the place where Church felt community. These were the songs our choirs sang marching down the aisle at the call to worship, during the invitation or for the “grand march” at anniversary. While there wasn’t a genre of music called “Praise and Worship”, many of these songs made way for a new generation of artists because of the intimacy of their lyrics.

Please don’t stop with my review. Go out and get this CD. Don’t stop! Get It! Get It!

What do you get when you pack the hottest music of Bishop Paul S. Morton, Pastor Shirley Caesar, Youthful Praise featuring J.J. Hairston, Martha Munizzi, Juanita Bynum, The Williams Brothers, Lisa McClendon, and Israel & New Breed into one CD? The Stellar Awards Hits 2007!

This project showcases 13 songs by gospel music artists who, either took home the prestigious Stellar Award this year or were nominated to do so. It superbly blends together music from traditional, contemporary and praise & worship genres of Gospel music.  The music of the late Bishop G. E. Patterson, Virtue, Ziel, and New Direction also are included on this compilation.

My Favorites include:

*    “Turn It Around” by Israel & New Breed. The lyrics, arrangement, musicianship and live performance liberate your spirit to dance out loud.

*    “Look Where He Brought Me From” by the late Bishop G. E. Patterson is a sanctified, caffeine-rush of down home, foot stomping, Sunday morning Gospel music jam. Has been on REPEAT in my home for about a week now. The exhortation on the end makes you wish it were more than 2:59 mins long.

*   Lisa McClendon gives you the best that she has on her neo-soul spin on “Just Another Day (That the Lord Has Kept)”. It’s smooth, urban, funky, hot.

*   There are some preachers from whom all I want to hear from them is preaching; Prophetess Juanita Bynum is not one of them. On I Don’t Mind Waiting, Bynum and friends take you into the throne room. If you have recently experienced a setback or disappointment, this simple song is enough to encourage your soul to wait on the Lord.

BEN TANKARD

“Let’s Get Quiet: The Smooth Jazz Experience”

GospoCentric Records / ZOMBA Label Group

Reviewed by Moses T. Alexander Greene

When I get a CD from a record label, most of the time it’s in the “Mastered and Approved” phase; which means, no artwork, liner notes, or graphic design—just the music and a list of songs. I played this CD the morning of March 27th while running slightly late for work.  “Sultry” was the first word that came to mind when I heard Track 1 “Let’s Get Quiet (Shh).” I played the song a second time; again feeling that the vocals and music were sultry. The vocals (Shelly Massey) didn’t seem to be reflective of “good, wholesome, sanctified” music (whatever that is) so I ran to the cover because I wasn’t trying to be overly critical.

Nevertheless, “sultry”, “inviting”, “almost sensual” were the only words/phrases coming to mind. Something was being stirred within but it was neither my spirit nor my soul.

The title of Ben Tankard’s latest work is Let’s Get Quiet: The Smooth Jazz Experience. As one who has been listening to the Smooth Jazz brand of jazz stations since the late 80s, I am familiar with what one daily receives from a “Smooth Jazz” experience—a sleek blending of easy-listening jazz and smooth-sounding R&B crafted for the mind, spirit, soul and body to find rest. If this was Tankard’s goal, he completely achieves it.

Let me be clear: Track 1 Let’s Get Quiet (Shh) is not meant to bring salvation to your soul; now your marriage is another subject, your mind yet another. The title track, like the majority of this cd, effortlessly yet intentionally beckons you to a place of inner rest and peace. After listening to the lyrics, it is about God calling you from your busy lifestyle to moments of solitude with Him. At first listen, it may engender feelings more of “Let’s Get It On” than “When We All Get To Heaven What A Day of Rejoicing That Will Be”!

Let’s Get Quiet (Shh) – Instrumental Version is as soothing as a cup of old-fashioned hot cocoa on a cold, winter afternoon; perfect for the married man looking to have a “lazy, do nothing day” with his wife at home. Just put the song on repeat. But remember it’s sultry, sensual and almost inviting; perfect music to play when you want to make-up with your spouse. Single folk stay away!

Tankard visits the Frankie Beverly & Maze Before I Let Go. You know…that last song that was played at college parties. This instrumental version is perfect to be played in the background when entertaining friends.

Remain Calm embodies Tankard’s genius as the progenitor of the gospel jazz genre of music that he first brought the world 15 albums ago. The composition of the song is light and sensitive, yet full-bodied. I’ve begun to include listening to this song (along with I Come To The Garden Alone and Close Your Eyes) first thing in the morning when I do my “Morning Pages”, (a stream-of-consciousness writing exercise designed to get whatever is cluttering one’s mind out of himself in order to be more creative). Remain Calm is just great, gospel jazz and helps me get the noise of my mind and soul out of myself.

Slow Jam W.B.E.N. doesn’t make you want to grind but it is its name: a Slow Jam. (Notice, it’s not a part of my morning devotion period!).

If you think listening to jazz, a Smooth Jazz radio station or any other music other than traditional Gospel is ungodly then this project is not for you. Or, perhaps it is. On Ben Tankard’s Let’s Get Quiet: The Smooth Jazz Experience he superbly gives music that embodies this phrase from Elisabeth Kubler-Ross: “Learn to get in touch with the silence within yourself…” We don’t serve a haphazard, disorganized, or volatile God and must learn that He yet yearns to communicate to us through His peace. The majority of this cd sounds like the peace of God reigning in a musician’s heart. Is the music sacred? Should it be played in the sanctuary on Sunday mornings? Not Slow Jam W.B.E.N, Before I Let Go and Let’s Get Quiet (Shh): Instrumental Version. But is the intention behind this project purposeful and meaningful in the life of today’s Christian? Absolutely! For me, it’s a winner; but I love Smooth Jazz.

(Note: Throughout Tankard’s career he has earned 15 RIAA Certified Gold Albums, 6  Platinum Albums, 9 Stellar Awards, 3 Gospel Music Hall Fame Awards. For more information on his ministry, click here:  http://www.bentankardministries.com.

STEPHEN HURD

“My Destiny”

Integrity Gospel

(Note: Music Editor Moses T. Alexander Greene provided studio background vocals on four tracks on Stephen Hurd’s “In the Overflow Vol. II recording. He is also a member of First Baptist Church of Glenarden where Hurd serves as Minister of Music. With so much familiarity one may ask, “How can he be unbiased? We at In The GreeneRoom believe it to be possible. After reading this review, we hope you agree).

I love what God is doing in the realm of those who, rather than wait to be picked up by a major label before recording any thing, start out as independent artists. A perfect example of this is how for the past two years the Stellar Award for “Best Song”—which is considered the highest honor of the evening—has been won by songwriters/artists who had previously recorded those same songs on their own projects (Jonathan Nelson “Healed” and Isaiah Thomas “I Will Bless The Lord”), but gained popularity when more established psalmists added the songs to their CD.  In similar fashion, as a music editor and connoisseur of Gospel music, it greatly encourages my heart when formerly independent artists actually transition to and are picked up by any of a handful of major Gospel or Christian Contemporary Music record labels. Stephen Hurd is one such artist who has achieved this feat.

MY DESTINY is Stephen Hurd’s next dimension of musical revelation to the world. It is a wonderful follow-up to LIVE IN DC– A Call to Worship, (his first CD on the Integrity Gospel label), which had unforgettable songs like the hi-energy, funky praise anthem Undignified Praise and worshipful Lead Me To The Rock.

After an introduction by Pastor John K. Jenkins, Sr. of the First Baptist Church of Glenarden, MY DESTINY musically begins with a Prelude Of Praise that tells your spirit to “Get Ready! Get Ready! Get Ready!” for something special. The catchy song Great Praise (The War Cry) and its Reprise are more than invitations for a corporate praise experience. Through the ‘war cry”, an alarm is sounded for the listener that God is worthy not just of “any old of praise” you can muster up, but of intentionally-given, purposeful great praise.

Track 6 Todah quickly became one of my favorites. Perhaps because I personally love when artists revisit their earlier work because there always should be a difference in how the music is sung. For fans who are already familiar with Hurd’s discography and think they have heard this song already—listen to it again! You will find that award-winning producer Steven Ford has re-engineered song and its musical accompaniment in a way that brings replenishment to you—even as you are familiar with the lyrics.

(Something in Todah make me smile every time I hear it.  Stephen exhorts, “You’re a holy God. You’re a RRRRRRRRRRRighteous God.” The rolling of the r’s gives me a chuckle every time I hear it. I want to ask him—“Is that something that you practice?!). Todah is a smooth, praise-intensive ditty driven by Stephen’s exhortation throughout. The Zamar Celebration, a reprise of sorts for Todah, showcases Steven Ford and Jonathan DuBose. It’s great to hear the instruments give praise to God.

Jesus You’re Wonderful - For whatever reason, it reminds of something that Andrae Crouch and the Disciples could have sung in the late 70s. It’s light enough for you to snap your fingers to yet meaningful enough for you to really get your praise on. The drive reinforces that Jesus is altogether “wonderful”, “excellent”, “glorious” and “everything” to you. Sorta hot.

The Glory Of The Lord reminds me most of the Praise & Worship Leader Stephen Hurd that First Baptist Church of Glenarden sees Sunday mornings. This song showcases Stephen Hurd’s strength as a worshipper; that is, his ability to bring the intimacy he experiences with the Father to the corporate worship experience. Everything about this track is complementary: the background vocals, the orchestration of the music, and Stephen on lead. “The glory of the Lord is in this place/Come worship in the place/The glory of the Lord/See His glory. Feel His presence/the Glory of the Lord.” Anyone looking to learn how to practice the presence of the Lord should put on this track.

Destiny. Wow. That’s really the first word that comes to mind when I think of the ministry in this song.  In all genres of music, there are times when an artist will stumble upon a song which forever characterizes their musical legacy. For Tramaine, one of those songs is “Changed,” for Pastor Shirley Caesar it’s “Jesus, I Love Calling Your Name,” and for Richard Smallwood, “Center of my Joy.” For Stephen Hurd’s ministry, I believe that he has stumbled upon one of the songs that fans will still be requesting to hear 30 years from now. The song is timeless because the questions it addresses transcend time. “What’s the plan that You have for me/ the place You’ve called for me to be/Some people call it destiny/ would You let me know?” And the chorus is the stuff that dreams are sustained by until they come to fruition. “Thank You/for showing me/ directing me to my destiny. I know what I’m here for.”

Whether you are singing these lyrics (penned by Jonathan Nelson and Justin Savage) with clarity of your purpose already in place or from a position of purely of faith, these words, music and ministry of this song has the potential to change you. However, seeing Stephen Hurd minister this song live is exponentially more intensive and worship0inducing than what listeners receive on the project.

Other notable songs include, “Healed By The Power Of His Word” and Revelations 19:1.

Drawbacks: The listener may crave his vocal leading versus his spoken instruction at certain parts throughout the project. There were definitely times for me as a listener when it appeared as if as a vocalist he retreated to the more comfortable place of exhortation and teaching about worship rather than for him to free himself to sing.

On My Destiny Stephen Hurd invites you to places that he is most familiar with; namely, being in the presence of the Lord, experiencing the glory of the Lord and being able to say without doubt, “I Know What I’m Here For.” As we serve a God who is omniscient, just being able to have that knowledge—of what you are on earth to do and be—is, to me, the very essence of being connected and rooted in His love.

TRAMAINE HAWKINS

“I Never Lost My Praise: LIVE”

GospoCentric Records / ZOMBA Label Group

Reviewed by Moses T. Alexander Greene

(Note: In the GreeneRoom Contributing Writer PJ Morgan is a musician on this project).

Hot! Hot! Hot! I’ve been waiting for over one year to proclaim, “I was there!”  Caravans founder Mother Albertina Walker was there. Walter and Edwin Hawkins, were there. Richard Smallwood, Ted Wynn, Lucinda Moore, and Kurt Carr were there; and I was too!

On I Never Lost My Praise: LIVE, Tramaine Hawkins literally blows the listener away. Intellectually, my mind couldn’t wrap itself around the staggering fact that this was the same woman who brought us the classics (He’s That Kind of Friend, Goin’ Up Yonder, and my favorite song of all times, Changed) because her voice and her ministry is as strong today as it was 30 years ago. And we all know that there aren’t many singers in any genre of music whose vocal prowess is just as pristine, crisp and powerful 30 years after we first hear them. (In R&B/Soul Gladys Knight immediately comes to mind as one of the only true vocalists who has stood the test of time).

In the Gospel arena, artists may start that talk-speak-songy kind of exhortation/ ministry versus flat out singing, but Tramaine Hawkins is still a flat-footed Gospel belter!

*       The first single from the project Excellent Lord, (written by Tramaine’s son songwriter Jamie Hawkins), is a festive song of adoration. Dance ministries can look to implementing this song into their Resurrection Sunday repertoires.

*       When Kurt Carr, (who serves as a producer), said that he studied the early works of Walter Hawkins to create music that was ideal for Tramaine’s vocals and style of ministry, it is never more evident than on tracks 3 and 4: You Get The Glory and I Never Lost My Praise. Because of his mastery in songwriting, Tramaine is flawless.

*       You Get The Glory—Reader you will stand up in your living room or kitchen and envision the Senior Choir from your childhood church marching down the center aisle. (Remember that Mother who would lead them down without a microphone down the aisle until the choir reached the choir stand—Love that!) At 3:33, Tramaine slows the song the down and kills it like she did “He’s That Kind of Friend”. But it’s on the VAMP where she reminds us of what what real singing sounds like. The note she hits at 5:24 has me shaking my head every time I hear it.

*       I Never Lost My Praise—This song has been on rotation in my cd player since I got the project; its lyrics on rotation in my heart since I left the recording February 18, 2006. This isn’t just Tramaine’s song—it’s all of ours. Anyone who has kept their praise in spite of the hardships of life will readily identify with it. If you play this song when you are by yourself, leave the smelling salt on the counter/desk/passenger seat and instructions on how to use it for whoever finds you because you are going down!  (LOL! I’m in my office and just got a quickening! (7:18))

*       Worship Medley—Simply Put. Exquisite. Long, but exquisite. (See comments below). Reintroduces us to the softer, sweeter Tramaine and then she goes to a dimension of ministry that is new; just as powerful but more intimate. By the end of the song you are ushered to a place of “Innermost Court Intimacy”. Just a place to worship freely in the presence of the Lord.

The only drawback of the project for me, and it’s more of a concern than an issue, is the length of many of songs. Not how long they are in real time, but that they aren’t broken down into reprises and separate songs. (Part of me is thinking of radio programming as well. Do radio announcers play 7 minute songs?). Israel Houghton as producer and artist so aptly taught us how to have medleys, transitions, and songs within songs and to differently number the tracks versus giving the listener long song. Such application would have would have proved beneficial for the listener.

I felt this mostly in I Never Lost My Praise (8:36), Come Holy Spirit/Worship You (8:08), and the Worship Medley (11:05). An 11 minute long song in 2007!  To get back to my favorite song of the Worship Medley (the transition from the Bill Gaither classic “There’s Something About That Name” to “You’re Everything To Me” written by Walter Hawkins) I have to scan my cd back to the 5:35 minute mark.  (Note: The number of songs that each producer or songwriter gets on a project are usually contractual so some of my observations are based on my preference but may not reflect contractual agreements unaware to the listener).

Other notable songs include I Just Can’t Make It (Sounds like late 70s/early 80s Tramaine); I Need You and a return to the Gospel classic, Oh Happy Day

Between the generation of female vocalists like Pastor Shirley Caesar and Inez Andrews and the generation of CeCe Winans and Yolanda Adams, there was one sterling voice which God used to caress us. Her name was Tramaine Hawkins. Although her voice is familiar, her ministry on “I Never Lost My Praise: LIVE” is refreshing (i.e. it’s not just “another” Tramaine CD). Also, to the credit of the producers and songwriters, this cd is stuffed with well-written music and a variety of musical styles. (It’s not like having a Gospel legend and the only song worth hearing on the project is the single that’s released.) Great project!

“For A Reason”

Reviewed by P. J. Morgan

Kendall King is someone you can't tell is a local artist. The packaging of her c.d. rivals those of artists signed to industry labels. The cover is fantastic! As a producer, especially when I worked with a record company, the design and graphics of the press kit and c.d. meant the difference between a listen versus a game of “CD Basketball” at the waste basket.

Back to the music…

Kendall offers a variety of styles that almost anyone would enjoy listening to. She has something for everybody.  Her vocals are very smooth, and the background work is flawless.  However, as a producer, I felt that a little more time could have been spent on lyrical content on some of the songs.  Perhaps a few co-writers could have given her a different lyrical approach, or that
timeless lyric that is quoted years after the artist is forgotten.  The production is keyboard driven on most songs, something that an array of co-producers would have taken care of.

But all-in-all “For A Reason” is a solid CD. Here are some of my favorite picks from the project:

Say So - The guitar breaks the heavy keyboard presence of the rest of the record. It has an R & B feel to it.  It matches the vocals well, lead and background. The song breathes and feels alive.

So Good - Funky tune. I can see my playing this on repeat on a road trip. It fills my head and ears with music and rhythm.  That is what music is supposed to do.

At All Times - Well produced and put together.

Kendall King offers a variety of styles and feels in the presentation. All in all this is a great record inside and out.

Robert E. Person makes a debut, which shows his talent and his love for older music, specifically jazz. Here are my producer comments on the CD:

“The Call”  - It has an 80's feel.  You can really feel Robert pouring out his heart on this one.  The production could have been as intense as the delivery of the message.

“This Day”  -Beautiful arrangement, beautiful musicianship.  Maybe the key should have been a little higher so that the begging vocal doesn't sound muddy.

“Right There” - Gives you the impression that Robert appreciated the music of the 70's and 80's.  The production took you there right with him.

TheCall

“For Granted” - Very jazzy. I'm glad the music was bold in taking it to a different place.  That's what gospel music needs since it is so diverse now.

“I Can't Believe” - Great song. Vocals need to be produced to fit the music.

“His Eye Is On the Sparrow” - Wonderful arrangement, wonderful vocals.

The listener gets what Robert is trying to say.  Additional producers on the more modern stuff and better production of the marriage of the vocals and music would push this over the top!

Southern Rap Artist's Sophomore Release, After The Music Stops Debuts at #8 on Billboard Gospel Chart and #1 on the CMTA R&B/Hip Hop Chart with 2217 Scans

LOS ANGELES—Cross Movement Records/Reach Records artist, Lecrae hits the ground running with impressive first week sales of his sophomore release, After The Music Stops (Provident-Integrity Distribution—CBA Market/Sony- BMG Distribution---General Market). With 2217 scans, the University of North Texas graduate/Youth Evangelist debuted at #8 on the Billboard Gospel chart behind gospel heavy hitters, Kierra "KiKi" Sheard (2280 scans) and the 2006-WOW Gospel Project (2811 scans). In addition, Lecrae debuted at #1 on the Christian Music Trade Association's Overall R&B/ Hip Hop Chart, sharing company with CCM's Rock/Rap artist, TobyMac and Gospel diva, CeCe Winans. Lecrae is the fourth CMR artist to debut in the Top 10 on Billboard's Gospel Chart during the first week of sales.

"Cross Movement Records in conjunction with Reach Records is elated to see such a response to this album and Lecrae. We hope that this is only the beginning of what we think the true potential is for After The Music Stops. It is our prayer that the industry and the church at large would continue to give us the opportunity to demonstrate the valuable ministry of solid Christian Hip Hop," says John Wells, President/CEO of Cross Movement Records.

"After the successful release of Lecrae's debut release Real Talk, we are proud to offer a project that communicates the uncompromising message of Christ in a relevant, authentic way," says Ben Washer, CEO of Reach Records. "With the impact of After The Music Stops already being felt, we are excited about the influence this album will continue to have in a world heavily affected by Hip Hop music and culture."

As with all Hip Hop artists, Lecrae rhymes about his life and experiences; however, his songs revolve around ministry. He is the President of ReachLife Ministries and a member of The Downline Institute, a discipleship program where men from all over the city of Memphis meet to study the Bible and learn about disciple making in a 9-month intense program.

The Houston-born, Southern Hip Hop lyricist spends his time conducting Bible studies and preaching the message of Jesus Christ to youth that are heavily influenced by the negative aspects of Hip Hop culture and its glorification of violence, drugs, sex and reckless living. Lecrae keeps a busy tour schedule traveling across the country, which has included select tour dates with CMR flagship artist, The Cross Movement.

Cross Movement Records is preparing to release a music video for the track, "Jesus Muzik." The label has also created an extensive online marketing campaign for Lecrae which includes a short documentary/electronic press kit, e- card blast with music samples and the CMR online, media affiliate only press room.

Cross Movement Records and Reach Records also have fan websites that feature Lecrae's e-card, tour schedule and excerpts of his heavy bass-laced, street anthems such as "Jesus Muzik." The rock/rap title track of the CD, "After the Music Stops," embodies Lecrae's personal philosophy. His desire is to make sure that after attending a concert or listening to a CD, a person exemplifies a lifestyle of a Christian. Lecrae says, "I'm all about representing Christ with your whole life whether that's in a crowd or in everyday life."

About Cross Movement Records: Founded in 1997, Cross Movement Records has become a trusted name in Christian Hip Hop while maintaining its mission to put on full display what the combination of music, artistry and culture can look and sound like when surrendered to the Kingdom agenda of Jesus Christ. The label, based in Sicklerville, New Jersey and distributed by Provident-Integrity/Sony-BMG Distribution, continues to raise the standard of Christian Hip Hop. Its ongoing WhyHipHop? Campaign was designed to encourage the Christian community to embrace Christian Hip Hop and has released two CD compilations. Bishop Joseph W. Walker presents Judah Generation

Reviewed by Jontil Hunt

Overall, Bishop Joseph W. Walker presents Judah Generation gives listeners a wonderful experience in which to partake. The lyrics of each song have meaning and the group seems able to minister with both power and conviction. This is a project that you can listen to in your car, at home, or wherever you are and still be able to have an encounter with God.  What I like most is that it is a praise and worship CD that shows a new generation of young people rising up to fight for God's kingdom.

The group opens with We Come To Worship, a church anthem that lets the listener know what they are all about as a group; its sole purpose is to serve and worship God. The song has a down-home “chu’ch” feel that makes those of all ages want to praise God.  The contemporary, soft rock flavored I Am Free is the next track on this wonderful project. Led by Take 6 member Mark Kibble, the song empowers you to be set free from the devil's tactics. Not only are you no longer bound, but you’re also now declaring that you're taking back everything he spiritually stole from you. (This song was also recorded by the artist Khristian who was “In the GreeneRoom” in December 2005. See below for a review of his project).

After Judah Generation has declared its freedom, on the track Dance, Dance, Dance its members now praise God how they want to with what they call a "crunk praise." This song has a rock-and-roll breakdown with a rap that makes the song more youthful in its appeal.  But this group is not just about fast, up-tempo praise songs. It also takes time to slow it down and give reverence to God in worship. Judah Generation knows without a doubt that without God they are nothing and that they need Him in everything they do. They need His healing, His direction, His power, His anointing, His wisdom, His patience and His blessings.  They minister these words in their cry out to God on We Need a Healing—a definite winner for the group and youth and young adult ensembles, praise teams and choirs.

The group takes it back to church again in mid-tempo songs that have a back-in-the-day, community choir sound like the James Cleveland classic "There’s a Bright Side Somewhere" and the standard of Baptist Church adult choirs in the 90s, "There Is No Way."

For all who think my generation knows nothing about hymns and songs with a real message, Judah Generation uses His Blood Washes Me and The Blood Medley to make sure that you know that we know the blood still has power. This section of the project reveals to the listener what the blood that Jesus shed for us on Calvary does.  Because He died we are cleansed of our sins and are covered by it.

Other songs include: Let the Anointing, a personal song to the Lord asking His anointing to move through their lives and touch their spirits. They then let God know that no matter what they will serve Him; Until, a song on which they give the listener hope and faith to continue in serving God despite everyday trials. Even if the situation seems like there's no way out, keep your focus on God and in the end your prize will come; We Say Yes, through which Judah Generation steps out on their own faith to surrender to the Lord's will and are bold in their decision to stand firmly in their commitment; and Joy, which lets the listener know that in Christ there is continuous joy and nothing to be sad about.  The group ends the CD with Where U At, an up-tempo song calling everyone to serve God.

While the CD may be more directed toward the youth of today in it’s marketing, I found no reason why an older crowd shouldn’t find it just as enjoyable. It can minister to people of all ages if they let it. From the musicians to the harmonious sounds of the choir, everything seems to be in order. Because its members know what they were created to do within their own generation, Judah Generation empowers the listener to take the first steps of taking his/her role in God's Kingdom; that is, to live for Him and to learn to turn all of our problems and cares over to him. Overall, a wonderful CD!

Introducing V3

V3 are three young women who’ve got something going on.  Something major and memorable, and perfectly made for this moment in time.  From smooth R&B grooves, to slammin’ hip-hop and gorgeous ballads, sisters LaToya, Sacha and Shelley Vinson have delivered one of the year’s most striking albums, poised to explode from one end of the radio dial to the other.

With an ear to the street, and eyes always focused on their higher calling, V3 delivers a message of relevance and urgency.  And their self-titled project is a profound journey into that rare, anointed place where entertainment, inspiration and worship meet in perfect harmony, and the natural intersection of gospel and contemporary R&B.

As the children of a pastor/father, and a mother who was a professional singer, songwriter and recording artist, the sisters grew up singing under their mother’s careful tutelage, and guided by the spiritual teachings and example set for them by their dad.  V3’s musical influences range from traditional and contemporary gospel to mainstream pop and R&B, as they fuse the inspirations of their mentors with cutting-edge, 21st-century sensibilities to create a sound both exciting and entirely their own.

“Give Me One Reason,” the first single from V3, is a powerful ballad and a showcase for V3’s rich, in-the-blood, family vocal blend.  “Let It Go” puts a tough, hip-hop edge on a mighty funk groove, and “Speechless” is an instantly memorable ballad that lays V3’s signature vocals over a punchy, muscular bottom-end.

With V3 set for a summer release, V3 is embarking on what promises to be a long and exciting journey; and with their compass and course clearly set.  “We want to entertain people, and show them that there’s no contradiction in enjoying yourself and also being a Christian,” Shelley concludes.  “We’re just people, like everyone else, and we’re not perfect at all; but you don’t have to be perfect in order to receive God’s love.  Our greatest purpose is just to love people as much as we can, and try to live the kinds of lives where others can really see his love through us. That’s why we are here.  We want to let our light shine wherever we go.”

V3 Music Review by Denise Johnson

I am a huge fan of gospel, R&B and neo soul music. I like the fact that V3 is a young female group that chose to infuse Gospel music with R&B, Pop, and Neo Soul. However, when you
are putting out a project that is incorporating of so many different music styles and has so much crossover appeal, it should be clear whose kingdom is being represented in each song. Sometimes, I had questions or needed a second; third or fourth listen to get a more full meaning from a particular song.  As a 24-year-old woman I tend to feel that the target audience for V3’s self-titled debut is teenagers and young adults, ages 13-24. This album is definitely not for all ages.

When I purchase a CD I like to play it in my car. Usually, if I am not enthused by the first 1:20 seconds, I’ll SKIP ITL; if the beat is banging and the message is on point, I’ll BUMP IT! J

*        “LET GO”

BUMPED IT

*       I was really feeling this track! The beat is really funky and unique. You can really dance and stomp on el Diablo’s head with this song. There’s a wonderful message in it and the track is a great spiritual booster for those who are dealing with life’s circumstances. “Just let it go and give it to God” is what I got out of this track!

*       LOVE MAKES THE WORLD BEAUTIFUL

*       SKIPPED IT, PLAYED IT LATER THEN BUMPED IT

*       The first 1:20 seconds did not grab my attention. I had to play it over and it sounded much better in my car. (I don’t know how that’s possible but it is!!) God is love and the message in this song reminds us to love one another because it indeed does make the world beautiful. Not a favorite of mine, but the message is on point! If you take the time to listen to the whole song you will find yourself tapping your foot to this nice mellow beat.

*       I NEED YOU

*       BUMPED IT

*       I like this song only because of the message. I am sure that many people can relate to this song because as believer we go through many tests and trials. This song cries out to God, letting Him know that we can’t live this life alone. I feel like this song is our asking for assurance from God that he will step in if we put all of our trust in Him. Nice Track.

*       TAKE ME THERE

*       SKIPPED IT

*       I have to be honest and say that I didn’t like this song at all. The track had too much going on. I felt like I was listening to “The Pussycat Dolls featuring Joe Budden.” Not my cup of tea; however, this song may attract a younger audience. I listened to this song over and over and over again. Just to be fair…message? What is God’s will for my life, I will follow it.

*       IRREPLACEABLE

*       BUMPED IT!!

*       I absolutely love this song! It sounds like a Floetry track. It has a nice neo  soul vie. I love this song because it is talking about an irreplaceable love. However, whose love V3 is talking about can be up for debate. I can very well sing this song tot the Lord or to my fiancé without changing any of the words. Problem? It depends on the listener. I would enjoy this song even more if the Lord’s name—any of them—were mentioned at least one time.

*       CLOSE TO YOU

*       SOME MIGHT BUMP IT…BUT I SKIPPED IT!

*       This song could very well be a “club banger.” The beat sounds very similar to a certain Badd Boy Entertainment artist who has a song entitle, “ I Love You.” If you like that track then I am sure you will love this song. This is a vibrant song with a self-explanatory message (see the title). Not too bad! J

*       HAVE YOU EVER?

*       SKIPPED IT

*       I like the beat, it sounds like a Brandy tune. (I am a big fan of Brandy) However, it was kind of hard to understand the words in this song, especially at the end of the chorus. This song didn’t grab my attention. It does have some good analogies of love though.

*       TAKE THE TIME

*       BUMPED IT

*       I love the sound of this track. It has that “SNAP” beat that causes you to “lean and rock wit it” in a slow, jazzy way. God was missing in this song though (just like in “Irreplaceable.”) I can serenade my fiancé with this song. I think it’s really important that edgy Christian love songs like this need to have Christ’s name mentioned…somewhere. Maybe V3 will do this in live ministry.  There’s nothing like having a love relationship with Jesus and even better to have a heartfelt love song like this about Him, but listeners may feel the same way as me: If you’re going to sing a love song to Jesus, at least say his name, say his name…J

*       LET’S TAKE IT

*       SKIPPED IT, LISTENED TO A SECOND TIME GOT AMPED,     BUMPED IT!

*       Taking back what the devil stole. “Take it by force.” Nice message…Sounds like a pop song. When I first heard this song, I skipped it. When I listened to it again it was very inspirational to me. By the third and fourth listen, I found myself changing, “Let’s take it! Let’s take it by force! Come on!” I was in my car like, “What?! You don’t want none of this!” This song had to grow on me. The track is not for all ages. I can hear my mother saying now, “Girl, turn that noise down!”

*       THANK YOU

*       BUMPED IT

*       What a beautiful way to end an album by saying, “Thank you, Lord.” The song sounds like an Amerie Track. Nice and simple. “Thank you for being so good to me…” This song will have listeners nodding their heads because their hearts are nodding to each and every word. By far, one of my favorite songs on the album. J
