Celebrity Green

Where celebrities answer the question:  What does going green mean to you and how do you contribute helping save Mother Earth?

AJ Calloway "Extra" New York City based correspondent.  As "Extra" begins its milestone 15th season, Calloway remains at the center of all things entertainment in Gotham city, interviewing the most talked about personalities in the country.

At President Barak Obam’s 2008 Extra's" AJ Calloway was among the revelers in Grant Park as history was made, and he interview Oprah Winfrey about this historic day.

Valder: AJ what are you doing to live and go green?

AJ: I have always been somewhat green.  I recycle; I have been a vegetarian for quite some time.  I am not big on using light, so I keep the use of light to a minimum.  If everyone did something, we can see a difference.

Valder: My listeners e-mail me, and they want to know if you are dating anyone?

AJ:  Well right now, I am having a love affair with GOD and does not leave room for anyone else.

What can kids do to help Planet Earth?

No matter what kids should always pursue their dreams.

To clean the air and to clean the atmosphere is important.  The planet is like a space ship traveling through space and at this very moment at a great speed.  It [earth] needs fuel to remain strong.  Children can do a lot in the future to keep this planet [earth] space ship earth healthy.

What can we do to help Planet Earth?

Growing a garden is great for air quality.  Not only are you helping with earth’s air quality there is less exhaust from trucks delivering more produce to your local supermarket.  Most food travels about 1,500 miles to get to your local supermarket.  By growing a garden, you are cutting the need for more fuel, reduce travel distance for your food and are eating fresh food when it is immediately ready after harvest.  www.growgoood.com.

Going Green with Ed Gordon

  • Host, Black  Enterprise TV It’s Our World

Valder Beebe:  You are father to your 14-year-old Taylor.  Are you teaching your daughter anything about the environment?   I feel the environment is the mind, body sprit wrapped into one, from my perspective.

Ed Gordon:  To be honest my daughter’s generation is teaching us about the environment.

I think about the environment in many aspects.  I think the environment is all of what you surround yourself with.  Not just the traditional sense of environment when we talk about being and living green.  Green, now that seems to be the new favorite phrase.

However, I talk about the environment that you place yourself in.  Weather it is a toxic environment environmentally, in the sense of what is physically around you.  On the other hand, a toxic environment with the people that you surround yourself with. and the situation that you surround yourself with.  In a sense we try to do all of that in mind, body and soul.  I look at the idea of environment as being all-encompassing.  And to gain an understanding of; what you surround yourself with, often, you become.

Virginia Wills:  I try to eat seasonally.  I pay attention to what I put into my body.  Food is the freshest when you are working in season.  In terms of being green and the holiday.   I try to be cognizant in making fewer trips to the grocery store, being complete with my menu and my recipe list so I am not just driving around.  I’m sticking to a plan.  Organization is going to save me time, money and it’s going to be good for the environment.

Going Green with MP Dunleavey, Columnist for MSN.com Money

Valder Beebe: Now, that we are living in this green economy, green is a complete environment. Moreover, money is the ultimate green.  What do you think people can do in the economy to be greener?

MP Dunleavey:  I think there is a connection in spending your money in more environmentally friendly ways that it benefits the environment and it benefits you.  This harks back to childhood.  When I was growing up my parents were trying to save energy and we had turn off lights when we left a room.  Now I am super careful to make sure I turn off any lights that are not in use.

What are you doing to Live Green on planet earth?

·As a New York City resident, I'm very sensitive to litter, I try and do my small part by always cleaning up after others when I can in public places. Taking time out to pick up the stray paper and simply put it in the trash or proper recycling bin – exercising a little home training! I'm also diligent about separating recyclables in my own home and minimizing my use of air conditioning by zoning off different areas of my condo and simply opening the windows. Growing up, I guess my mother was "green" or just frugal, before her time, because when I learned to wash clothes as a kid, she always made me use a full load to turn on the machine, no partial loads, thus saving energy and cost! Lastly, I almost always ride the Subway! Mass transportation is a great thing, as I haven't owned a car since 1998 given my previous Harvard apartment on Boston's "T" line and as a user of New York City's extensive mass transit system for the last 8 years as a resident.

What are you considering as you contemplate Going Green on planet earth?

I think the next big step for me would be to build or "greenovate' a "Green" home in the future and to do my small part to contribute to and use alternative energy products as they are developed, i.e. wind power, solar power, hybrids, etc.

In order to live green, I eat as much local organic sustainable food as possible and try to remain as aware as possible of my footprint on the planet.  I try to reduce waste, consume less, recycle or reuse when I can, and spend more time giving than receiving.  The best gift you can give yourself is to give something to another.

Anything about that is about the future, your talking about future based activities. You are talking about taking care of something for the future; in this case you are talking about the world. I love cars for example and race cars but at the same time I also have a hybrid because everything needs to be in balance. You can have a car that eats up gas and is polluting away, you can balance that out and become what they call carbon neutral by having a car that is ultra environmental. You can walk more or ride your bike or buy carbon balancing donations to companies that plant trees. These are ways that we can think about our future in moderation and that is what going green is to me.

My parents were very conscious about not wasting natural resources – yes, they were way ahead of their time!   What sounded like a broken record (back in the 70’s), became such a routine that I am still following what my parents thought me at a very early age:

  • Always turn off the lights when you exit a room

  • Take quick showers

  • Keep the shades down during the day to conserve the house cool or warm

  • Never leave the water running for more than a few seconds, specially when brushing your teeth

  • Turn off all electronics or electric appliances as soon as you finish using them (TV, computer, radio, iron, etc.)

Chef Cassondra Armstrong on Going Green?

Well, today I did all of my traveling using public transportation.  I brought a train day pass and rode it to the downtown station, which I later found out that I could also use the ticket to ride the bus as well.

I got a little exercise by walking to my appointment, about 2-3 block from where the train let me off.  After I completed my business I walked another 2 block to my next appointment, when finished I walked 4 blocks to a bus stop, where I was able to use the same ticket I brought for the train, sat read a book, received a couple of phone calls, ate cheese and grapes, and drank water all while waiting on the bus.  The bus came I continued to read my book and before long I was at my stop, well actually, I missed my stop and had to get the next stop a block up due to being on the phone (with Valder Beebe) but not a problem.....I needed the exercise.  It was great!

LIVING GREEN INSPIRATION SPEECH TO START A GREEN BUSINESS, OFFER GREEN JOBS OR BE EMPLOYED IN A GREEN JOB

By Valder Beebe

Founder, Beebe’s LIVING GREEN 2008

www.valderbeebeshow.com

Hello, I am Valder Beebe and I host the Valder Beebe Show, an FM and global Internet Radio and Television Show.  Our show addresses topics of mind, body and spirit with some of the most celebrated people in the world along with ordinary people on their life’s journey such as you and I in this room.

I get to host the Valder Beebe Show to inspire the “I AM,” a.k.a. GOD, within each of us.  What an awesome and joyful job I have been given as purpose.

To make all of this work, I am the CEO of PIP Production and A BEEBE OMNIMEDIA CO. based in Dallas, Texas.  At the end of this meeting you can get a business card, newspaper and a Green Living Business Listing in the back of the room if you would like more information.

Now that you have a peek at who I am, I want to talk with you about Living Green.

Living Green is a movement taking place on Planet Earth. We have gone through the Stone Age and the Industrial Revolution; and now we are in the Technology Revolution.

We at Smart Living Green are dedicated to illuminating solutions and bringing information and methods to “recycle, reuse, renew and Live Green” for ourselves, our families and the planet.

Many African Americans have been “living green” long before it was "the thing to do," we just didn’t know what to call it.  My Living Green Partner, Gary Johnson of Black Men in America asks “Do you remember the fictional character Fred G. Sanford from the ‘70s television series “Sanford and Son” starring Redd Foxx?  Fred Sanford was ahead of his time.  Think about it.  Fred was the ultimate “recycler” and more than just a junk man.  If anyone had asked Fred what the initial “G” stood for in his name, he would have replied, “The 'G' stands for G-R-E-E-N!"

I know that you are aware that living green is everywhere.  Each April 22nd we celebrate Earth Day and April 25th Arbor Day (plant a tree).  Yet what does living green mean to you?  Living Green is about leaving the earth a better planet than when we arrived for our brief life journey.  It’s about using the earth’s resources wisely and giving back and about recycling, reusing and re-purposing items that we need to sustain us.  To sum it up, it is to “leave as small a footprint of damage as possible on the earth.”

Tele-Seminar, host, Darryl Mobley, publisher of Family Digest Magazine

Interviewing, Valder Beebe, founder of Beebe’s LIVING GREEN.  An Eco-Awareness Platform of (Valder Beebe Show.com).

Topic: Valder Beebe Talks………….$aving Money and $aving Green in business and your home

Living Green Questions Mr. Mobley asks Valder Beebe:

DARRYL MOBLEY1. What is Living Green?

VALDER BEEBE: Many will have many definitions, some that will benefit the earth and others that will benefit our human need to make money.  Living Green is to “use wisely the resources of the earth today and tomorrow with the power to recycle, reuse, renew.”

DARRYL MOBLEY 2. What are some key details we need to decide first to incorporate Living Green in our lifestyle?

VALDER BEEBE: Why do I want to live green?

What commitments am I willing to make to live green?

Will I live green even if no one is aware of my contributions?

One person needs to start, and another family member can be taught to participate.

I advise to change one thing, and start with that.  You can store your cleaning chemicals in a location where the family does not frequently breathe; example, the garage, patio, back porch.

You can start with reusable grocery bags, because this will be a learned behavior.  Then commit to perhaps a form of recycling, let’s say, for the Sunday paper.

Go to www.valderbeebeshow.com for other ideas of how to start to live green.

DARRYL MOBLEY 3. How can we use those details to hone in on a way to live green that works for our families?

VALDER BEEBE: First, look in your medication cabinets at home; what types of medications are in there?  Example, medications for breathing? Diabetes? High blood pressure?  So, first, make this analysis.  Those medical conditions I mentioned all impact the Endocrine System, and perhaps the severity can be reduced with using fewer chemicals, eating more whole foods, and walking (instead of riding in a car).  All of this is living green for you and your family.

DARRYL MOBLEY 4. What one thing can I do NOW to live green?

VALDER BEEBE: Simple, stop getting ATM receipts (no one really uses these).

Bring your own micro-fiber reusable grocery bag when shopping.

Stop as much junk mail delivery as possible.

Store cleaning products away from your indoor location.

DARRYL MOBLEY 5. What five things can I implement in my lifestyle to live green?

VALDER BEEBE:

1. Reuse: Buy products that come in reusable containers and repurpose them for other functions.

Manufacturers are developing new packaging that is sturdy with re-closeable lids or zipper seals.  Buy these containers and reuse.

2. Recycle: Recycle the packaging from your purchased products.  Use a trashcan, and instead of putting in “trash,” put in recyclables.  Some things will need to go in the trash; they are sold as just not reusable.  Over ¾ of the average household’s daily trash (junk mail, store ads, packing material, computer paper) can be recycled.

3.    Renew: Sign up for a library card (or renew yours).  Instead of buying books that are non-fiction or biography that you may not read again, check them out from the library.  Then buy only reference books, recipe books, etc., that you may use again and again.  This is the ultimate in reuse.

4.  Reduce what you buy.  Choose to live your life more with less.  You may now choose two cereals to purchase instead of three.  Do you really need a third pair of summer flip-flops, when you already have two?  Make the responsible choice.

5.  Reduce the use of your car.  What I am saying is take a look at your driving habits. Do you jump in your car and drive to the mailbox?  Do you drive your dog to the dog park to walk?  Do you drive to the laundry facility of your complex?  Only you can look at your personal lifestyle.  Look at ways to reduce your consumption and induce more healthful choices.  Perhaps walk to the mailbox.   If you have small kids, this can even be a family event and a teaching opportunity about the environment or another family value lesson.  Why not walk your dog within the neighborhood more versus so many driving trips to the park?  Still do the park, but make it an occasion.  Walk to the laundry room perhaps as an opportunity to exercise.  Carry a small basket to/from the laundry room, and use the time while at the laundry to read a magazine or a chapter of a book.  Reduce!

DARRYL MOBLEY 6. What are some of the most popular recycling methods?

VALDER BEEBE: Each city or each neighborhood seems to define that.  The most recycled materials are plastic, aluminum, copper, Styrofoam.  Go to Earth911.com for what to recycle, and enter your zip code to find a recycle location near you.

DARRYL MOBLEY 7. What are the most popular items to recycle?

VALDER BEEBE: The most popular recycled materials are cardboard boxes, glass, plastics, aluminum, copper, and Styrofoam. Just to give you a sense of the amount, this breaks down to about 39 million tons of paper/paperboard, 13.7 million tons of plastics and 10.9 million tons of glass.  If you want to recycle, go to Earth911.com for what to recycle, and enter your zip code to find a recycling location near you.

DARRYL MOBLEY 8. How can I save money by Recycling? Renewing? Reusing?

VALDER BEEBE: As you practice LIVING GREEN, you become a conscious consumer, selecting products that have value.  Now the value may be “a smaller footprint on the earth – and at times the value may be a way to save more and harm the earth less.”  But you will be conscious that your decision is of value.

DARRYL MOBLEY 9. What web sites can teach me more about living green?

VALDER BEEBE:  I suggest going to valderbeebeshow.com and clicking on “living green” to visit our partner site blackmeninamerica.com/green.htm where you can learn more about living green.

Living & Going Green. How you can be a part of the green change $$$$.

Inspiration for Entrepreneurs; Business Ideas; Green Collar Jobs

How can Living Green be beneficial to you?  There is money in Living Green.  I am here to inspire you to be excited, to be inquisitive and to be proactive as you make money with the benefit of saving the planet.  Now I am not here to talk about the basics of helping the planet like changing out light bulbs and turning back your thermostats, because most of us in the room for years have turned back the thermostats in the winter and then up in the summer.

Let’s get down to business inspiration.  There will be millions of new businesses spawned from the Green Movement, not to save the planet but for selfish reasons of making money.  But that is OK, because we and the planet can benefit.

I am here to challenge you to think from right where you are to come up with an idea for a business, a product or service to start in 30 days.  Yes, 30 days to plan, pray and think.

You will need to come up with your own ideas, because right now there is not a Going Green SBA, that is, Small Business Administration, but remember, “Greater is He – GOD- that is within me than is outside of me.”  So you have the tools to pray, meditate, ask and have faith.  Pray for divine wisdom and divine intervention and action.  These are your tools.

You see, many African Americans and the poor have been a part of the ecology movement since the beginning of the new Americas.  We wore hand- me-down clothing, lived in hand-me-down housing, and took leftover and spoiled food to feed our families (and, may I add, we made meals of substance that made and kept the poor strong).  The poor have recycled throughout the history of America.  What we lacked was a “popular title” and marketing effort to make it successful.  But now you have an awakening to be ahead, to be a part of the green financial movement.

Intro 5

OK, here are some business ideas.  You will need to know what are your strengths and your creativity to building a business.  It is not impossible, but with all faith ventures you will need Hebrews 11:1, which tells us that “faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen.”

OK, here are some ideas and businesses to contact about starting your Green Business:

Thrift Store <green name> Resale Clothing Store.

Partner with someone and sell regular clothing and designer clothing.  You are recycling, keeping clothes out of landfills and meeting clothing needs of families.  A resale shop is a good business, because much of the merchandise is donated so inventory is not always purchased.

Dream Resale Store, 972-247-7960

Maid service<green name> Domestic cleaning service.  This service cleans the home of the often overworked, over stressed working families.  Add green cleaning products to your service, and your revenue can increase.

Living & Going Green Opportunities. Summary and Q&A.

These are just a small fraction of Green Businesses that you can build, retool or start.   The possibilities are endless.

The current tally of 8.5 million U.S. jobs in renewable-energy and energy-efficiency industries could grow to as many as 40 million by 2030, according to a November 2007 report commissioned by the American Solar Energy Society.

Linking the New Energy Economy, Workers and Good Jobs: The Green Collar Jobs training initiative will connect over 150,000 workers a year with skills certification and living wage jobs in the new energy economy, meeting the industry's need for qualified workers. States, businesses, labor unions, community groups and educators will train and employ new energy economy workers together.

Green companies are sprouting. There are some 200 new businesses spouting everyday. The sector is growing so fast, there's a critical shortage of entry-level workers. And that's opening doors for the unemployed.

I hope you have received inspiration to start your own business or to seek a green collar job.  My goal is for you to illuminate your thought process to become a provider of the green movement rather than a recipient.

What It Means To Live Green

By Javonnah

Everyone is talking about “Living Green,” but what does “Living Green” really mean? We’ve all have experienced the point of life where you just thought you couldn’t make it, and we don’t want to experience it again. So today you will know what “Living Green” is all about.

Instead of being so busy and stressed out, relax a bit. Just look on your calendar, it is all full. You have no time for friends. If you want to “Live Green,” RELAX!  Well, don’t relax so much that you forget to do the things you really need to do. Balance it out a bit. Just plan out your work and then plan out some “Me Time.”

Instead of buying a burger to save some time, make that salad that you have been wanting. Also, stop wearing these uncomfortable shoes and suits. Put those jeans on that you always wanted to wear and that cool top that is in style.

Make some time to clean your desk. Recycle all of those papers you know you don’t need. Take your whole family to somewhere they have always wanted to go to. Spend time with each and every one of them. Take the time out to say “I’m Living Green!”

Eight Ways to Save Water on the Planet

By Javonna

Now I know you don’t want our Planet Earth to look gross in a few years just because you’re not saving water. Today is the day when you will save the planet! So read on! Read on!

Tip#1     Do not litter; you know what will happen. It will get in the oceans and pollute them. Then that’s one body of water we can’t use. Reuse, Reduce, and Recycle.

Tip#2     Wash the car on the lawn using a bucket instead of on the road or driveway. This will stop detergents and car grime from entering the drain and ending up in our waterways.

Tip#3     Find less toxic alternatives to fertilizers, anti-flea rinses, and other pesticides that contain harmful chemicals. These soak into the ground and wash into waterways or sewage treatment plants.

Tip#4     Use a milk carton to store your cooking oils. When it gets full, then put it in the rubbish bin.

Tip#5     Don’t pour paint and other chemicals down the drain. Dispose of them on chemical collection days.

Tip#6     Don’t flush trash down the toilets because the trash will go through the drains into the ocean.

Tips#7     If you go fishing, don’t throw food in the ocean unless you know that is what that specific animal eats. If an animal eats something that causes it to have a disease, it affects the whole sea and damages it.

Tip#8      Don’t throw spoiled food in the ocean because this might cause the organisms inside the ocean to become sick. If it is a type of animal we eat, we might eat it and become sick too.

Earth has more saltwater than freshwater, so this tells you we have no time to waste water. I hope that you have learned from this article and will follow the tips. So remember, Keep Reading!

Javonna is a sixth grade honor student at a Texas Charter School who plans to be a Physician.

Eight ways to Conserve Water at Home

Now I know that you get tired of paying that high water bill. Well after you read these tips you can buy those new shoes you want. No need to stress out on how you are going to pay the bill. So just sit back and learn!

Tip#1   Check your house water meter and after a few hours have passed check it again and if it doesn’t read the same as it did before you have a leak somewhere. You should find it and get it repaired.

Tip #2   do not water your lawn if it doesn’t need watering. If you walk on the grass and it springs back up, it doesn’t need watering. If it stays flat then that’s when you know when to water your lawn.

Tip#3    When you are watering your lawn do it long enough where it will sink down into the roots. If you don’t do it long enough it will evaporate quickly and you will have to water the lawn again.

Tip#4     Use a broom instead of a hose to clean driveways. If you use a hose you are just using up water when you could be saving it.

Tip#5     Now we all use a lot of water when brushing are teeth. When you are brushing your teeth don’t keep the water running while the toothbrush is in your mouth. Turn the faucet on when you need it.

Tip#6    Don’t let the faucet run when you are cleaning vegetables. Instead of letting the water run wash the vegetables in a clean pan of water.

Tip#7     Keep a bottle of water in the refrigerator instead of running tap water into it cools off.

Tip#8     Instead of flushing trash down the toilet, put it in the trash can or recycle it. When you keep flushing things down the toilet you are wasting water.

Now you have learned tips on how to save water. I don’t want to see your water bill with more than two 0’s. You have learned something new today and you will keep learning as long as you keep reading!

Printer Ink Cartridges Buy New or Re-Ink?

Yes, most of us do it. “Do what?” you may ask. Most people throw away their empty printer ink cartridges. Well, at the end of this article you will know whether to throw away the printer ink cartridges and buy new ones or refill the ones you were about to throw away.

A recent TechWorld.com report tells us that many consumer-level printers will give you a notice that your printer cartridge is empty, although 60% of the ink is still left in the cartridge. So you should take the cartridge out of the printer and give it a good shake instead of throwing it out and getting a new one. Chances are you will get several weeks of additional use of the ink cartridge.  So if you go out and buy a new cartridge and throw the old one out, you may be wasting more than half of the ink you paid for.

If you want to save your printer ink and the price you pay for it, then get printer refill kits and refill your cartridges three to four times until the cartridge becomes worn out. Printer refill kits cost about $10.00 or 1/3 of the price of a new cartridge.

So now you know all the facts.  I hope you put these suggestions in this article into action. Also, remember when you throw away the cartridges you are hurting the land, because 60% of the ink may be still in the cartridge. The ink gets into the land and hurts the earth. You can also refill colored cartridges. So be smart and refill that cartridge.
