Don’t Live Mean, Live GREEN!

Every Day is Earth Day

Earth Day

Is the day where people should appreciate Earth’s environments and learn about the issues that threaten Earth. Some people celebrate Earth Day in March, but the national day of Earth day is in April each year. Right now Earth Day is observed in 175 countries, and coordinated by the nonprofit Earth Day Network. The United Nations celebrates an Earth Day each year on the March equinox, a tradition that was founded by peace activist John McConnell in 1969. A second Earth Day, which was founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in in 1970, is celebrated in many countries each year in April.

People should celebrate Earth Day more because the more people learn about it the more people will start to realize that they should take action and start conserving water and start recycling. If each person in the world recycled at least once a day, that would help Earth become healthier and less polluted.

So we should all come together to save our planet Earth, not just on Earth Day, everyday. So remember don’t live mean, live GREEN!

Black Men In America.com is Going Green—For Good!

Black Men In America.com has partnered with Valder Beebe to help us learn more about "living green."  African Americans have been “living green” long before it was "the thing to do," we just didn’t know what to call it.  Do you remember the fictional character Fred G. Sanford from the 70’s television series “Sanford and Son” starring Redd Foxx?  Fred Sanford was ahead of his time.  Think about it.  Fred was the ultimate “recycler,” and more than just a junk man.  If anyone had asked Fred what the initial “G” stood for in his name, he would have replied, “The 'G' stands for for G-R-E-E-N!"

Valder Beebe is the driving force and host behind The Valder Beebe Show which provides lifestyle and spiritual connections to its listeners.  She believes if we change the way we look at things that those things will change.  We're partnering with her to help us live healthier and more fulfilling lives and protect our environment for future generations.

Going Green with Chuck Leavell

Keyboardist, Rolling Stones & Tree Framer

Chuck Leavell has grown Christmas trees on his tree farm, Charlene.  A family-owned tree farm that he manages with his wife when he is not touring with the Rolling Stones.

www.payitforward.com

What do you know to be true in your heart about living Green?

My wife and I have been tree farmers for over 30 years.  In 1981 my wife’s grandmother passed away a left a parcel of land and we moved forward becoming farmers and being good stewards of the land.

A few thoughts………Renewable energy and bio-mass coming into play and we can use the materials from trees to make ethanol and bio-gas.

I think the future is bringing so many opportunities.  The new administration brings such bright opportunities for the environment.

The amazing fact is we have about much forest coverage as we had about 100 years ago in America.

Trees are a natural and an important renewable resource.  Trees play an important role in our lives to sequester carbon and exchange oxygen.

March Allen, Founder and publisher New World Library www.newworldlibrary.com

New World Library publishes books and audios that inspire and challenge us to improve the quality of our lives and our world.

What am I doing to live green on Planet Earth?

My home has solar heating; I live very close to my work (something I've almost always done), so my commute is minimal.  Our publishing company, New World Library, has always been on the cutting edge of the green movement.

We were a very early supporter of the Green Press Initiative and have had solar power for years.  We recycle as well, of course, and have a composting operation behind our offices that creates rich, black soil out of our organic
garbage. Here is the statement we put in the back of all our books:

New World Library is a socially and environmentally aware company, and we strive to embody the ideals presented in our publications.  We recognize that we have an ethical responsibility to our customers, our staff members, and our planet.

We serve our customers by creating the finest publications possible on personal growth, creativity, spirituality, wellness, and other areas of emerging importance. We serve New World Library employees with generous benefits, significant profit sharing, and constant encouragement to pursue their most expansive dreams.

As a member of the Green Press Initiative, we print almost all our titles with soy-based ink on 100 percent post-consumer-waste recycled paper. We power our offices with solar energy and contribute part of the profits of every title to non-profit organizations working to make the world a better place for all.

Thomas M. Bloch, former CEO of H&R Block and currently a middle school math teacher and president of the board at University Academy, has been involved in a variety of education initiatives since he changed careers. He and his wife, Mary, founded the Youth Service Alliance of Greater Kansas City to encourage and recognize outstanding community service through school-based programs. He is also a founding board member of the Kansas City Foundation for Higher Education, a trustee of the University of Missouri at Kansas City, President of the Endowment Fund for the Henry W. Bloch School of Business at the University of Missouri at Kansas City, and chairman of the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation. He returned to H&R Block in 2000 as a member of the board of directors.

Dear Valder,

What am I doing to live green on Planet Earth?
To reduce our carbon footprint, my wife Mary and I grow a wide assortment of organic vegetables in our own garden. This creates several benefits, including 1) not having to buy as much food at the grocery store and 2) reducing the frequency of our car trips to buy groceries. We are also avid walkers and make a point of walking instead of driving a car whenever possible. We also make a point of recycling paper, plastics and glass at home.

At the charter school I co-founded, called University Academy, we encourage the use of electronic mail to significantly reduce the school's consumption of paper. Even student progress reports are available to parents online. In addition, we have a school-wide recycling program.

Thank you, Valder, for encouraging all Americans to live Green!

Ethanol

By Javonna for LIVING GREEN www.valderbeebeshow.com

Ethanol is a liquid alcohol made of oxygen, hydrogen and carbon and is obtained from the fermentation of sugar or converted starch contained in grains and other agricultural or agri-forest feedstocks. In Canada, ethanol is presently made principally from corn and wheat. Ethanol can be produced for different applications, for example, industrial ethanol or fuel grade ethanol. Research into technology to produce ethanol from non-food sources is advancing rapidly and is close to commercialization.

Ethanol is blended with gasoline to produce a fuel that has environmental advantages when compared with gasoline and can be used in gasoline-powered vehicles manufactured since the 1980's. Most gasoline-powered vehicles can run on a blend consisting of gasoline and up to 10 percent ethanol, known as "E-10", which is available at some regular service stations across Canada.

Some vehicles are specially manufactured to operate on an ethanol blend that contains up to 85 percent ethanol and at least 15 percent gasoline. (The 15 percent gasoline is needed to assist in engine starting because pure ethanol is difficult to ignite in cold weather.) This E-85 blend cannot be used in standard gasoline vehicles, however vehicles designed to run with a high ethanol blend can also operate using gasoline when necessary. E-85 is presently used by some organizations with large vehicle fleets, but it is not yet commercially available in Canada.

Now you have learned about ethanol and are one step closer to Living GREEN!

Flex-Fuel

By Javonna for LIVING GREEN

Flexible fuel, or flex-fuel, vehicles feature specialized engines that can utilize two different fuels, often in a mixture. In the United States, this commonly refers to a vehicle utilizing the new E85 technology. These vehicles use a fuel mixture that is 85% ethanol, a biofuel made from corn, and 15% standard gasoline.  They can burn any combination of ethanol-to-gasoline ratio, but the E85 combination is the standard.

The reason for flex-fuel vehicles is to burn more ethanol and less gasoline. The theory is that ethanol burns cleaner than gas, emits less pollution, and decreases the United States' dependence on foreign oil. This is why the Bush administration is so hot for the topic.

The proponents of the E85 flex-fuel tell us that using E85 will greatly reduce harmful emissions from vehicles. This is true.  However, the facilities used to produce ethanol are run by using either natural gas, which is expensive, or by using coal, the cheaper alternative..

How to tell if your vehicle is E85 compatible?

1. Check to see if your vehicle is one listed below. Be certain to check the ENGINE SIZE of the vehicle. (If your vehicle is not listed, your vehicle is NOT E85 compatible.)

Well now you know that if you have a car with flex-fuel you are reducing the amount of pollution that comes from cars. So remember, don’t live mean, LIVE GREEN!

WALL.E

By Javonna for LIVING GREEN

Academy Award-winning writer-director, Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo), and the inventive storytellers and technical geniuses at Pixar Animation Studios created a cosmic comedy about a robot named WALL.E (Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class). WALL.E is a fun and adventurous film, even with little dialogue. WALL.E is a robot who has been doing the same job for hundreds of years. WALL.E was overlooked during the evacuation to space, so he keeps doing the same job he was programmed to do. Then he meets a robot named EVE and thinks she is the most beautiful thing he has ever seen. He follows her into space to report the evidence of life on Earth (which the humans have been eager to return to.) So join WALL.E and the adventures he faces to help EVE get the evidence to the captain of the ship and return the humans back to Earth. This movie is very futuristic and teaches us a lesson about the consequences we could face if we don’t clean up the Earth.

Biofuel

By Javonna for LIVING GREEN

Biofuel can be broadly defined as solid, liquid, or gas fuel derived from recently dead biological material, most commonly plants. This distinguishes it from fossil fuel, which is derived from long dead biological material.

Biofuel can be theoretically produced from any (biological) carbon source. The most common by far is photosynthetic plants that capture solar energy. Many different plants and plant-derived materials are used for biofuel manufacture.

Biofuels are used globally and biofuel industries are expanding in Europe, Asia and the Americas. The most common use for biofuels is as liquid fuels for automotive transport. The use of renewable biofuels provides increased independence from petroleum and enhances energy security.

Biofuel is the buzzword which embarks the beginning of an era that would see the world    go green. We do not have an option though, as this is the only entity touted to save the world by reducing dependence on fossil fuels and emissions especially the corn-ethanol. Biodiesel, unlike petroleum diesel, is non-toxic but do not just vouch for it, for flaws are embed, as they too contribute and harm the environment.

Here is an advice for all those people who are trying to convert their old cars into green machines. These cars include gas guzzlers like a Lincoln Continental Mark V, a Chevy Tahoe, and a Cadillac. One fails to recognize that the fossil fuel footprint is still very high. People may not recognize the critical need for conservation if they think they have eliminated their fossil fuel usage by switching to biodiesel (or corn-ethanol).

Increasing consumption of biodiesel has resulted in cutting down rainforests for planting Soybeans especially in Philippines. That in itself gives us a rough idea as to how green the earth is going. Biodiesel is a fuel that is made from the long-chain esters (fatty acids) from plants. These are usually concentrated in a few parts of the plant such as seeds. The problem is that only a very small part of the overall plant, just a few percent of its dry weight, is made up of these esters. The rest is basically some kind of cellulose or starch. So you’d be throwing away that part of the plant (or doing something less useful with it) rather than making fuel from it.

Maroak Designs Jewelry

Beebe’s LIVING GREEN

James Beebe – Valder Beebe (wearing Maroak)

In today’s market, the brand of the creator is as important as the product brand.  So knowing more about the designers further brands our purchases.  Marsha Hamilton Box is unique in her hand crafted, one-of-a-kind, high end jewelry designs.  She does not advertise nor market her jewelry.  Her brand is a verifiable, word of mouth success.  Her jewelry designs are unique and exquisite in a time where products do not stand the test of time.  Maroak Designs jewelry excels as a 21st century product in addition to the hand crafted beauty the products are crafted in Marsha’s home studio.  This brand that is brought direct to the consumer is a LIVING GREEN business.  This conservative brand is not just conservative in the couture pricing yet conservative in production.  Many products that are produced outside of the U.S. at low cost (and at times low quality) are trucked to market, then shipped by boat and/or plane thousand of miles from China, India, Korea to America.  Maroak Designs a Made in America product, crafted in Marsha’s New Orleans workshop in her home.  Each day Marsha is steps away from work with quality time to contemplate how to serve her clients.  No sitting in traffic to be frustrated which can create negative energy.  No long commute, just time to ask God ‘how can I be of service today.”

Maroak Designs Jewelry designed and created by Marsha Hamilton-Box, who serves GOD through the management of her company that is based on pleasing GOD, serving GOD and representing GOD in the highest light.  Maroak Designs produces beautiful products; bracelets, earrings and necklaces handcrafted original designs and a hallmark of exquisite craftsmanship.  Genuine stones, Swarovski crystals, sterling silver, pewter and 14 carat gold filled hardware create distinctive deigns all through, by and for the glory of GOD made with spiritual energy.

$AVE on GAS - $AVE ON TRANSPORTAION

To find the Lowest Gas Prices, search www.GasBuddy.com or www.GasPriceWatch.com by zip code or city and state to get the lowest prices in your area.

Reduce your fuel consumption.  Now is the time to carpool, rideshare, use public transportation, get a discount bus pass through your employer, ride rail transportation.

Walk often to routine destinations: mail box, laundry room, neighborhood shopping, close visits.

Fuel-efficient cars, hybrids, Bio-Fuel vehicles, motorcycles, Vespa Scooters and bicycles are all options to consider.   If you are unable to trade your current car, keep it in top performance shape with scheduled maintenance, overhauls and a good relationship with your car care service.  Drive intelligently; drive the speed limit.

$AVE ON ELECTRICITY & WATER

In a single family home, consider not using all of the bathrooms.  Close one or two bathrooms off to family access.

Set your hot water heater to 1200  - Do a home energy audit to survey your home's structure, appliances and insulation and family's lifestyle.

Change or clean your furnace filter once a month, and have your heating and cooling system inspected regularly.

Reduce the number of appliances for use.  Use a surge protector to stop electricity drain.  Turn off all electrical devices with a surge protector at the end of the day.

Don't run the water hose while washing your car. Use a bucket of water. Saves 150 gallons each time.

Install water-saving showerheads. Saves 500 to 800 gallons per month.

Run only full loads in the washing machine and dishwasher. Saves 300 to 800 gallons per month.

Shorten your showers. Even a one- or two-minute reduction can save up to 700 gallons per month.

Don't use your toilet as an ashtray or wastebasket. Saves 400 to 600 gallons per month.

Capture tap water. While you wait for hot water to come down the pipes, catch the flow in a watering can to use later on houseplants or your garden. Saves 200 to 300 gallons per month.

$AVE ON FOOD COSTS

Healthy Food Is Much More Affordable.  Buy fresh, buy green.

Set a budget, use coupons (www.sistersinsavings.com), plan meals, avoid wasting food and share with extended family and the less fortunate.

Eating healthier foods can actually save you money, according to a 2002 study published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association. You save on reducing portion sizes and eating fewer empty-calorie foods.

Buy produce in season. Use sales and coupons. Brown-bag it.

Buy fresh, natural and local.  Utilize farmers markets.

Eat vegetarian 1-2 days a week. Avoid wasting food. Reduce fast-food consumption.

Learn canning and freezing methods for fruits and vegetables.

Start a city, country or suburban garden to grow vegetables and herbs. Visit local farms to pick fresh vegetables and fruit at lower costs.  Join or start a food co-op; buy more and share big.

$AVE ON MORTGAGE PAYMENTS

The FICO credit score plays a major role in determining the interest rate on your mortgage.   Scores 760 or higher get the lowest rate.  If your score is 700-760, wait to purchase until scores reach a minimum of 760.

A FICO score is a credit score developed by Fair Isaac & Co. Credit scoring is a method of determining the likelihood that credit users will pay their bills.

Make your mortgage payment your top priority, and pay down or eliminate credit card debt.

Make arrangements to break down your mortgage payments to bi-monthly payments.  This can net an extra payment yearly and reduce years off your mortgage loan.

Leave some breathing room in your budget. Consider a smaller mortgage that won't tie up too much money -- not more than 28 percent of your gross monthly income.

Skip the traditional PMI (Private Mortgage Insurance), and instead ask your lender to roll your PMI into the cost of the mortgage. This is a less expensive way to a home purchase with less than 20 percent down payment.

Depending on your circumstances, a professional debt management program may also be a good option.

 $AVE ON CLOTHING

Buy clothing for your family at end-of-season sales.

Buy designer clothing from consignment stores.

Buy one good investment coat, hat, and gloves for each family member for winter months.

Men’s career clothing can be purchased from warehouse stores and outlets.

Women’s career clothing can be purchased in limited quantities.  Buy quality items to mix/match.

Children’s blouses, dresses, skirts, shirts and sweaters can be purchased gently worn from consignment stores.  Shop for shoes and pants at discount department stores and sales.

Reduce clothing costs by buying mix-and-match pieces.

Reduce clothing costs by avoiding dry cleaning fabrics whenever possible.

Purchase clothing made from washable fabrics.

Reduce clothing costs by buying at the end of the season.

Avoid the mall and try to buy from a wholesaler.

Sell clothing you don't want at Consignment Shops.

DO NOT open a store credit card.
