Candy Canes:  The Alluring and Risqué World Of Modeling by Char E’

Writer/Model/Actress Char E’

Its 3:45 am.  A scared, confused and frantic young woman calls her mother from a hotel suite in Nashville, Tennessee, with news that the meeting with her “agent” went terribly wrong.  What was expected to be a once in a lifetime opportunity, as outlined by the scout who spotted her on an Internet site for aspiring models, Sierra found herself in an uncompromising position.

After responding to an e-mail from an anonymous talent scout some three weeks earlier, she had yet to see the advance payment for signing a 1.2 million dollar contract that boasts such extra’s as an unlimited American Express card, a new car,  $10,000.00, a wardrobe from a well known lingerie catalog and a role on a current hit television show.

Once in the hotel suite far away from the security of her warm home some 1000 miles away in Colorado, Sierra had time to reflect.  She missed her seven month old son Jacob and she thought about what she didn’t share with her mother during that frantic phone call.  Sierra felt deceived.  She allowed nude photos of her to be taken during the “meeting” with the agent.

Sierra was led to believe that the explicit photos were some type of requirement and that they would be “reviewed” so that the agent could discuss possible flaws with the scout such as bruises, tattoos, or added weight.  She was told that her contract would not be processed nor would she receive the advance payment until she agreed to do the nude photos.  Sierra returned home the next day.  She never heard from the agent again.

Unfortunately, in the modeling business this scenario is not an isolated incident.  The reality is that tens of thousands of photos of aspiring models are “uploaded” daily onto a host of dot.com entertainment sites that encourage fresh faces and hot bodies to be featured on their web sites.  A few years ago, Nielsen/NetRatings, estimated that 34 million people visited porn sites - about one in four Internet users in the United States.  The average user is "looking at 121 pages, going back six times and spending an hour and seven minutes every month looking at adult-related material.

According to a study by the Seattle, Washington-based Web-filtering company N2H2, all that browsing has caused the number of pornography web pages to soar with over 1.3 million sites serving up about 260 million pages of erotic content.  N2H2's database of porn sites includes many low-budget, fly-by-night and sometimes unscrupulous operators hoping to rake in their share of a market that the National Research Council estimates to be in the $1 billion range annually.

It is estimated that Americans now spend somewhere around $10 billion a year on adult entertainment, which is as much as they spend attending professional sporting events, buying music or going out to the movies.

From an aspiring model’s perspective.  The Internet is an A+ opportunity for a model to get their 15 seconds of fame!  The possibilities to gain exposure and fame at little or no cost are unlimited.  There are no rules, height, weight, or even age requirements, although the average age range is probably between 21-32 years.  Ultimately, life as a “Candy Cane” can often be sticky sweet.

While a model is building her fan base, days are filled with assuring compliments from many adoring people who surf the Internet feverishly, chatting with supporters and fantasy photo shoots that depict the model looking sinfully delicious. .For many models, this type of attention can be intoxicating.  These appetizing photos lead to interviews, features, promotional work, music video work and car shows.  The exposure in some cases can be very lucrative.  Many models that were otherwise overlooked by the traditional modeling world can get a lot of attention as a dot.com “Honey.”

If you don’t believe me, one has to look no further than this web site.  According to Gary Johnson, Black Men In America.com started as an issues oriented online magazine for black men with some content for women.  As the site sought to increase its visitor base, they turned to spotlighting models.  According to Johnson, 50% of Black Men In America’s visitors go to the modeling sections first and then navigate to other content areas of the site.  “In the beginning, I was very uncomfortable posting models on the site, but the numbers spoke for themselves.  I finally decided that if this is what we have to do to get black men to read, then this is what we will do,” said Johnson.  Black Men In America.com does not post nude photos or endorse the use of pornography.  They feature women who are accomplished outside the field of modeling as a way of illustrating that you can be successful in other areas of life.  The site also posts articles and resources such as Real Life with Roudie,” the first known Internet reality series for models, to warn them of unscrupulous agencies and practices.  In short, Black Men In America.com is “model friendly.”

Seasoned models utilize their official web sites as a mass marketing tool and can benefit from paid membership on their sites.  These “virtual beauties” range from students, business professionals, entrepreneurs and housewives.  Many of these folks, consider this career in erotica to be entirely separate from their personal lives.

Summary

Before allowing yourself to be dipped into this saucy, gooey world of Internet modeling, beware of exaggerated offers of work in exotic locations from Webmasters who host “amateur” looking web sites and offer no phone contact information.

You should always:

  • Ask for references and interview other models who have worked on similar projects for that site.
  • Be selective in what you will do and know how far you are willing to compromise your values for publicity and exposure.
  • Follow your instincts.  If it doesn’t feel right, make a sharp “U-Turn,” your safety and peace of mind come first.
