NBPC, ITVS Host Virtual Screenings of Films Showcased
in National Multimedia Initiative Exploring Black
Masculinity
Tune in online on July 2, 8 p.m. EST, for “Remix:
February One,” a vivid snapshot of the Greensboro Four
(SAN FRANCISCO/NEW YORK) – On
February 1, 1960, Ezell Blair, Jr. (now Jibreel Khazan),
David Richmond, Franklin McCain and Joseph McNeil sat
down at a Woolworth’s lunch counter in Greensboro, North
Carolina.
With that seemingly commonplace
act, performed in the era of Jim Crow, the four black
men – later dubbed the Greensboro Four – changed the
course of American history.
In “Remix: February One,” Rebecca
Cerese, along with Steven Channing and Sabrina Gordon,
brings to life this pivotal moment in the American Civil
Rights Movement and paints a compelling portrait of the
Greensboro Four through historical footage, reenactments
and interviews. “I felt so relieved. I felt so clean,”
Franklin McCain says. “And I felt as though I had gained
a little bit of my manhood, by that simple act.”
Through
July 30, the National Black Programming Consortium (NBPC)
and Independent Television Service (ITVS) are
hosting a weekly, web-based viewing series to spotlight
shorts, such as “February One,” that comprise the
groundbreaking Masculinity Project.

THE STATE OF BLACK
AMERICA® 2009
Message to the
President
With the 2009 Equality
Index™
At the
dawn of Barack Obama’s historic presidency, The State of
Black America 2009 examines the critical challenges
—such as unemployment, home foreclosures, education and
health care reform — his new administration must address.
In this volume, the National Urban League presents the
voices of leading scholars, analysts and practitioners, as
well as ordinary citizens asking their government to respond
to their concerns – and offers its specific recommendations
for effectively tackling these issues. The State of Black
America 2009: Message to the President is an invaluable
guide, not only for the new President, but for anyone
seeking solutions that will empower every American to
Thrive, Earn, Own and Prosper.
We welcome the new vision the
Obama administration brings to Washington and to America.
But this vision can only become a reality if we make it so.
The State of Black
America 2009: Message to the President, is an essential
part of the National Urban League’s effort to bring about
this vision by working with the new Administration to tackle
the nation’s deepening domestic challenges. I hope that it
encourages and inspires each of you to join us in working to
help President Obama fulfill the promise he made to us last
summer “to build a nation worthy of our children’s future.”
---Marc H.
Morial, President and CEO
I hope that
The State of Black America
2009: Message to the President will find its way to the
desks of decision makers from the White House to both Houses
of Congress to every state house and to local governments
throughout the nation. I also hope that it will lead to a
national dialogue that spawns an agenda with support from
the private sector and its civic counterpart. With this hope
we can hasten the realization of my father’s dream so that
the narratives of all Americans can be one.
---From the Foreword by Martin Luther King,
III

THE CAMPAIGN DID NOT END WITH THE
PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION
Recording Artist Digit, Rally’s “Campaign for
the Arts” Support
(Washington, DC) – April 1. 2009, Seven
Hughes -aka- “Digit” and his nationwide initiative “Campaign
for the Arts,” continues to gain election like momentum and support
from the arts and entertainment industry. His campaign raises money for
schools and not-for-profits, focuses on
keeping the arts in schools, provides solutions to issues plaguing kids
and promotes all genres of artists.
With the success of television programs like
American Idol, So You Think You Can Dance and National
Geographic, talented people from around the world have become stars.
These popular TV programs focus on everything from music
(Musicians-Leaders, Composers, Instrumentalists, Vocalists) and fine
arts (Dance, Photography).
“Campaign for the Arts” focuses on the
importance of maintaining the art programs in schools, while showcasing
the immense talent of youth nationwide. The Programs are in
music (Musicians-Leaders, Composers, Instrumentalists, Vocalists) and
fine arts (Painting, Sculpture, Dance, Theater, Photography).
The Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes Foundation will
host the campaign events and a portion of all proceeds raised will go
toward the foundation, while additional proceeds will go toward the
charities and schools chosen to participate as a partner.
Not-for-Profit Organizations and schools are chosen
based on their level of commitment, current programs and through the
recommendations of sponsors. With assistance from Music Producers, EP’s
will be used to help raise funds. This initiative will allow artists to
combine their talent to make chart topping EP’s in support of this
campaign. The unified message is that “protecting the vision and
creativity of artists, is not an option.”
Update: Campaign for the Arts, Digit and the
Lisa Lopes Foundation will be recognized at an upcoming event on April
18, 2009 in Atlanta, G.A., hosted by E.A.P. Entertainment and A.H.
