Book Review: Two Weeks Until the Rest of My Life |
|
|
Harold T. Fisher |
|
Harold T. Fisher is a former TV news
anchor/reporter. Harold has been a writer of short
stories and erotic literature for over 20 years. This is
his first book. Janice Wilson, Senior Book Reviewer
LOVED this book. Here's a sneak peak at Janice Wilson's
review.
Before I
begin to provide a book review of this book, I have to
say that I was a bit confused in the beginning and then
astonished when I caught up with myself. Confused
because the author is male and he writes from the voice
of a female. Astonished because I could not believe how
the author captured the female voice and spirit
throughout this book. Mr. Fisher did a superb job of
providing the inner thoughts of the main character in
the book and I found this remarkable. I loved this book!
What I liked about it most was that it covered a topic
that is very real and current. Writing about the love
between an older woman and a younger man was very
interesting, intriguing and educational for me.
Although, the word "cougar" stayed in my mind while
reading the book, I now have a new found respect for
this relationship.

The Business of Culture |
|
| |
|
Afro-Latino Caribbean culture insists on tasty flavorful
food. One dish required at any meal is the beloved
plantain. The plantain's lure is its ability to be
served both as a vegetable and a fruit which is why it
reigns supreme in every Latino diet. From the savory
tostones rellenos (stuffed plantains) to pastelon
(Caribbean lasagna) or sancocho (stews); the plantain is
as versatile as the potato. The plantain is the
Caribbean potato!
Rivera's
Tostonera is a patented plantain press, invented by John
Rivera. John spent the summers of his childhood in
Piñones Puerto Rico, where his family owned a food kiosk
on the beach. Growing up he pressed thousand of plantain
chips. They had to make the tostones in a fairly
primitive manner, mashing them with a can, a brown paper
bag or between two pieces of wood one at a time. Today
tostones are still being pressed the same way.

Toni Ann Semple |
|
| |
|
New Artist Has A Lot Of Talent
Toni Ann Semple is an electrifying singer,
dynamic songwriter , a consummate professional and a
composer who has successfully married contemporary world
music with her Native American rhythms and musical
instrumentation to create such commercial songs like "I
DON'T WANNA TALK ABOUT IT", "FOR ME", "SUMMER BREEZE"
AND "SIT BACK AND RELAX" that not only is playing in
rotation in the United States on such radio stations as
98.7 Kiss FM New York and others, but also in the United
Kingdom, Germany and around the world. All this without
a record deal.
Toni Ann
Semple started composing music, teaching herself how to
play many instruments and performing at a very young
age. It was the eye and ear of her mother who first
noticed the talent and supported her daughters career by
purchasing her first guitar. Well it was that very
Guitar and Mothers love that ignited the very fire in
her that soon moved Toni Ann to teach herself how to
play the guitar, piano, trumpet, flute and a host of
other percussion instruments.

12 Things The Negro Must Do For Himself |
|
|
Nannie Helen Burroughs |
|
12 Principles That Stand The Test Of Time
Reprinted by popular demand. Nannie Helen Burroughs
(1879-1961) was an educator, orator, religious
leader and businesswoman who moved to Washington, D.C.,
as a young woman to take advantage of the city's
superior educational opportunities. The 12 Things The
Negro Must Do For Himself was a booklet sold in the
early 1900's. The retail price for this booklet was 10
cents. We learned about the book from Black Men In
America.com Founder & Publisher Gary Johnson. His
92-year old grandmother gave him her original copy of
the book several years ago. Here's a sample of the
"12 Things" that many people believe are as relevant
today as they were in the 1900's.
1. The
Negro Must Learn To Put First Things First. The First
Things Are: Education; Development of Character Traits;
A Trade and Home Ownership. The Negro puts too much
of his earning in clothes, in food, in show and in
having what he calls "a good time." The Dr. Kelly Miller
said, "The Negro buys what he WANTS and begs for what he
Needs." Too true!
2. The
Negro Must Stop Expecting God and White Folk To Do For
Him What He Can Do For Himself. It is the "Divine
Plan" that the strong shall help the weak, but even God
does not do for man what man can do for himself. The
Negro will have to do exactly what Jesus told the man
(in John 5:8) to do--Carry his own load--"Take up your
bed and walk."
3. The Negro Must Keep Himself, His Children And
His Home Clean And Make The Surroundings In Which He
Lives Comfortable and Attractive. He must learn to
"run his community up"--not down. We can segregate by
law, we integrate only by living. Civilization is not a
matter of race, it is a matter of standards. Believe it
or not--some day, some race is going to outdo the
Anglo-Saxon, completely. It can be the Negro race, if
the Negro gets sense enough. Civilization goes up and
down that way.
